    Guggenheim swirls

    So no Gehry downtown. The Guggenheim has finally abandoned its plans to commission a titanium swirl just south of the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River. The idea was derivative from the get-go: the design, architect and purpose all borrowed from the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. Since when does New York model itself on a depressed European milltown?
