In this edition of the Stalk: David Byrne, Winona Ryder, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard, Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johansson, Adrien Brody, David Bowie, Sofia Coppola, Pharrell and Kanye West, Ralph Fiennes, Joseph Fiennes, Lauren Bacall, Maura Tierney, Sting, Cuba Gooding Jr, Chris Noth, Lelee Sobieski, Jay-Z, Spike Lee, Jon Stewart, Jamie Lynn Spears, Sela Ward, Harvey Keitel, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Mike Myers, Ron Howard, Ryan Gosling, Narciso Rodriguez, Lizzie Grubman, Jamie Bell, Eriq La Salle, Cynthia Nixon, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Rosie O'Donnell.
David Byrne, with two ladies, ordered three drinks and left a $1 tip at Fontana's. He was wearing a backpack and carrying a bicycle helmet.
Helmetless, Winona Ryder was drinking last night upstairs at Cedar Tavern at 10 o'clock with not one but three bland average-looking guys. Needless to say I kept a hand on my wallet. A formidable funk of BO surprised as I passed the group en route to the pisser. Otherwise I would have stopped for a chat.
August 2nd, 10:10 PM, Saw Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard hailing a cab just in front of the Angelika on Houston at Mercer. Maggie was very pregnant, but looked great.
Aug. 4, 10 p.m. Bonita—Bedford Ave and South 3rd, Williamsburg. Spotted Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johansson dining with a few average looking friends at a middle table at Bonita. Scarlett look effortlessly fresh despite the heat in a white dress and simple tied back hair. Josh sat across from her looking sweet and squinty eyed.
Adrien Brody at the Apple Store in Soho around 1:15p on Thursday. Was in a sleeveless shirt, literally lounging on the table waiting for help. Not as tall as one would think, but very skinny...
Saw David Bowie at the muse concert at Hammerstein Ballroom last night. Seemed really into the music—bopping his sneakered feet to the beat. Gracefully ignored the wasted girl screaming "ground control to major tom!"
I just saw Sofia Coppola walking north on Lafayette towards Spring looking very 'tiny' and petite. Holding a Marc Jacobs shopping bag over her shoulder.
11:25am: Just saw Pharrell and Kanye West do a 30 minute concert outside of the Apple Store on 5th Avenue & 59th. Pharrell has such a cute face and had 2 GIGANTIC diamond earrings in his ear. He stopped and gave autographs and took photos with fans. Kanye looks very serious and straight faced. He didn't mingle much and went right back into the building.
I saw Ralph Fiennes browsing in La Perla's lingerie on Greene this morning. He was trying to be inconspicuous with a baseball cap and his head lowered most of the time, but his voice gave him away when he responded to the sales woman asking if he needed any help.
Joseph Fiennes was in the audience of his brother's play, Faith Healer, last night. I didn't notice whether he was with someone or alone because I was too busy picking my jaw up off the floor over how incredibly handsome he is.
I walked into my chiropractor's office at 1.15pm on Thursday the 3rd, who do I see but Lauren fucking Bacall standing in front of the ladies' room, dressed in a sweat suit (this was in a super fancy hoity toity exclusive fitness center, at which my chiro rents space two days a week). 67th Street and Central Park West.
Just saw Maura Tierney at Turks & Frogs (323 W 11th) eating in the back room at 7:30pm. She was with a girlfriend and enjoying a glass of wine.
I saw Sting and his wife getting out of a black SUV infront of Carnegie Hall Office building on 57th and 7th. He looked hot. Not cute, just sweaty!
2:45 pm saw Cuba Gooding Jr. sitting with a gentleman at Pastis having lunch. Got up to leave and took a picture with a girl at the table sitting next to him and his friend. Seemed very nice, and very cute!
On a hot and steamy Wednesday night around 9:15PM saw Chris Noth smoking a large cigar under a building entryway awning on 9th St btw bdway and 5th. He's still smoldering, though was sporting an unfortunate blue plaid shirt and a look that said, please don't recognize me, it's too hot for fans...
August 3rd, 10:20 pm: Having a beer at some pub (Broome something) on Broome and W Broadway, see Lelee Sobieski coming out of the back room in a bit of a hurry. Pretending not to notice her, ask my friend "Which movie sucked more, 'Deep Impact' or 'A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries' ". The lesson there is don't drink and IMDB.
Last night (8/2), while we waited outside of the spotted pig for a table, Jay-Z pulled up in a black tinted out Bentley. He naturally went right inside to a table upstairs. We were eventually seated downstairs, so we couldn't gawk at him through the entire meal, but we did see him out of the window by our table as he left. No Beyonce in sight, just a few non-celeb friends, but he looked smoking on his own.
Spike Lee chilling in front of the DJ booth at Butter on Monday night, chatting with a bald black man wearing a Harvard Law School tee shirt.
Saw Jon Stewart last night on 11th St. and 6th Ave. wearing a baseball cap and talking on a cell phone and walking into Ray's Pizza.
Blackout Confirmed: I was in Banana Republic this afternoon and Jamie Lynn Spears was waiting in line for the dressing room. It's going to happen. That's the last sign I need. Peace.
1:20 p.m. Tuesday saw a gorgeously-coiffed-despite-the-heat Sela Ward at David Duncan Antiques, perusing 19th century mirrors.
2:45 pm: Leaving Odeon on W. Broadway and Thomas today, encountered a sweaty Harvey Keitel. He looked overheated and had a bandana tied around his head. Despite all this, there was something sexy about him, in a dirty-old-man-kinda-way that I'm embarrassed to admit.
Hey, just saw Philip Seymour Hoffman escaping the heat in starbucks on 7th and grove,
Wednesday at 6pm. Looked disheveled in his gym shorts and loaded backpack. Smiled and waved. He smiled back. His girlfriend was waiting outside.
Meant to send this sooner but saw Mike Myers last Wednesday (July 26) on the corner of Bowery and Delancey, carrying.......A HOCKEY STICK. Same night saw Bloc Party going into the Holiday Inn on Lafayette in Chinatown....
Saw Ron Howard looking scruffy as ever having dinner with a mid-aged blonde woman on 73rd and Columbus. Was wearing a god awful white brimmed hat. Yikes...
Just saw a wonderfully scruffy Ryan Gosling on Prince. St. and West Broadway today at 4:00 wearing a lovely American Apparel shirt.
As a Chelsea gay in training, I was on my way to the David Barton Gym this morning at 10:30. On 23rd St between 7th and 8th Ave. Narciso Rodriguez steps out of a cab in this year's summer gay uniform, tight t-shirt and shin-length short pants. Upon closing the cab door, he quickly precedes to spit a luggie onto the sidewalk. There was no shame on his part. This comes from a man that charges $2,000.00 for a cotton dress. I guess money and fame can't develop class.
So today I was at lunch at Pastis and Lizzie Grubman charges in, looking like a heifer. Takes a seat at a corner table in the back with an attractive Asian woman and starts sucking down oysters. Was a most horrific sight. May have seen her nether regions. (Well, she was wearing a short black dress and at one point opened her legs wide to shift in her seat and I looked away as fast as I could, so I may have saved my eyes, and did manage to finish my lunch). Anyway, two tables away I saw someone I recognized as Simon Doonan of Barney's. I can't be sure that it was him, because he isn't as overexposed as most of the faces here on Gawker Stalker, but I think the fact that I recognized him (probably from those precious little collages New York mag helpfully provides in their society coverage) means it must have been him. THEN, was crossing the street back towards the Gansevoort, and in my distracted, phone-checking, self-absorbed-New-Yorker-going-to-get-hit-by-a-bus-one-of-these-days-while-texting mode, almost smacked into an oddly dressed, scruffy young man wearing giant white sunglasses. "Pardon me" I say, and as I glance up in an effort to make eye contact so that I can pretend I am totally sincere and NOT a totally self-absorbed New Yorker who is going to get hit by a bus someday, I recognize the scruffy young man in the psychedelic outfit as Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell I think is his real name), from the movie about the boy who wanted to be a dancer, which I love. Almost scream "Go, Billy!" like his ballet teacher, but realize he would not at ALL appreciate it, so instead I continue to cross the street while simultaneously texting my sister that I just saw Billy Elliot (and THEN I was hit by a bus).
Saw Eriq La Salle, formerly of ER on 14th street in Union Square near the Virgin Megastore. He was wearing a nice shirt/no tie and khakis. Looked like everyone else in NY on his/her way. He looked shorter than his listed 6'2".
Cynthia Nixon at Sette Restaurant, on 7th avenue in Park Slope, on hot Tuesday August 1 evening. Wearing red "Wonder Woman" t-shirt and denim skirt. Having dinner with her much bigger, very protective girlfriend and a couple of other women.
Totally unrelated to all the discussion about Beards and free Starbucks, but I saw Jamie Lee Curtis at 8:00am this morning at the Starbucks on York Avenue and 80th Street. Not hot like in True Lies, but still got it going on. Seem to recall her dad, Tony, has a place on East End Avenue.
I saw Rosie O'Donnell wearing a red, white and blue tie dyed shirt at the cold stone creamery on 42nd st yesterday around 3:30pm. She didn't have any makeup on and looked like a heavyset bomb pop. Was eating a giant wafflecone cup thingy.
