Robert Altman, whose gifts to cinema included MASH, Nashville, The Player (and, uh, Popeye) has passed away at the age of 81. Altman also directed the acclaimed production of Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean on Broadway. Altman never quite fit into the Hollywood system, and the three films mentioned above are pretty good illustrations of why. (If you only know MASH from the crappy seventies sitcom, Netflix that shit immediately.) Rest in peace.
