Thanks to the quite literally dozens of you who wrote in regarding our quest for buying a white suit in Manhattan. Sadly, H&M was no help, eBay would be too slow, and Dolce & Gabbana is a little rich for our novelty-suit-purchasing blood. However, tipster "MOGUL1NYLA" was right on the money:

Had to pickup a white suit for a celeb client of mine 1 week before Halloween because he wanted to go as Tony Montana... HA!! You can find them for $50 down at New Era Factory Outlet, 20 Orchard Street, NYC 10002. 212-966-4959.

Two caveats — New Era is actually at 63 Orchard (& Grand), and the suit pictured at right as actually $49. Cash only, but the proprietors were eminently helpful, even allowing me to try on the jacket at risk of dirtying it up with my personal crapulence. Envy this "Gianni Vironi" (since 1950!) creation, made of 100% Chinese polyester. It's four-button, which is far from ideal ("you're walking a fine line between guest and hired help" warns one wag), but beggars can't be choosers. And it's the right price for an ensemble that will very likely not return alive from its weekend in the Dominican Republic.
