This morning, we solicited information about the mysterious gas smell blanketing parts of midtown, and we got tons of valuable information. Psych, we got a bunch of identical "Larry King farted" jokes. But we did get some fun reports on where, when, and how you first smelled the smell that currently surrounds you. The most vaguely informative ones are after the jump.
When I arrived in my office just off Journal Square today, I thought the gas smell was just our building manager monkeying around in the drop ceiling again. I come to read that this smell is supposedly from Chelsea. My boss got diverted from the 33rd street PATH station to take the E line down to the WTC PATH station. He says it's a mob scene there.
when i got out of the subway and walked down 7th ave it smelled not so good...
and then when i finally reached my office (w. 36th street between 6th and 7th ave.) my building smelled so bad! i almost turned around to go home. why people in my office arent freaking out a little concerns me. why the city is like DONT PANIC IT'S NOT A GAS LEAK, THE AIR IS SAFE just pisses me off!
it smells like GAS! i mean, over a year ago when i was smelling syrup in the city i wasnt as concerned about that mystery smell. i'm rather concerned that i'll blow up by the end of the work day...
I'm at 33rd & 8th and everyone at my company has already gotten a "don't
worry, it's ok" email that has obviously gotten all my coworkers' panties in
a paranoid wad, obvs. I myself haven't smelled anything out of the
ordinary, yo. What with all sweaty skanks running to the Victoria's Secret
sale and the rotten odor constantly emanating from the crippled old fart
that is the 34th Street Friday's restaurant, I don't really look at any
disturbing smells around here as being anything to worry about.
Here's my company beautifully worded statement:
"Don not be alarmed the gas smell you may be smelling is NOT in the building
but being pulled in from the outside due to our ventilation system.
The building has advised that it should dissipate shortly, now it is just
irritating and Operations has been informed and will let us know if the
Thanks in advance for your cooperation."
(Best. Corporate. Email. Ever).
They even sent an NBC.com write up of the weird smell. RE.TAR.DED
I came into work this morning, took a big whiff and said "It smells like....Jersey in here!"
Guess it must have been bad- I work in Rockerfeller Center and our building was evactuated. I feel nauseated and my head hurts. I don't know if that's from the gas, or just because I hate my job.
i'm in an office downtown on hudson & king, and at 9 AM, the gas smell was overwhelming. since then, it seems to have dissipated. that, or i'm so high on fumes i can't tell the difference anymore.
