'What Is Up With' is a feature that asks the question posed by lazy stand up comedians everywhere about random New York phenomena. Enjoy.
Maybe our new pal Fashionista will clue us in here: why have white Chuck Taylor All Stars become the official shoes of New York City? Seriously, raise your hand if you don't own a pair. We feel like we've started seeing them everywhere we look, on the feet of people from every conceivable walk of life, from Bugaboo-pushing mommies to Williamsburglars to office dudes, paired with everything from jeans to leggings to suits (this lattermost is not recommended). We're not against them, necessarily, we're just confused. Who decreed that white Converse were the gold standard? When did they replace black — or even black on black — as the canvas shoes of choice? Is a rash of veganism sweeping the land? Are they just the only sneakers low-profile enough to wear with skinny jeans? Are the 90s back again? So many questions.
Update: Fashionista answers!
