Following the departure of Voice editor and Columbia j-school prof David Blum, has a purge of Voice hires with Columbia connections begun? Neophyte sports columnist Emma Span—daughter of writer Jon Katz and Columbia journalism professor Paula Span—was let go today, a spokesman for the paper confirms. Our initial source suggested that "maybe Emma simply ran out of sports to be sweetly naive about," but the Voice folks cast it as an admission that the Voice might not be the right place for a sports column.
