SIn the snowstorm of numbers during the internet's big earnings announcement week, it's easy to lose sight of the landscape. Sure, Google's doing well; Yahoo's results were disappointing. But take a look at this chart, comparing quarterly gross revenues, to see quite how well the Mountain View search engine is doing, and quite how far behind Yahoo is falling. Google's revenues overtook Yahoo's in 2005; in the most recent quarter they were twice as high. Yahoo can revamp its search advertising algorithms, reorganize itself, go Hollywood, retreat from Hollywood; and Google can fritter away time and attention on silly projects, or needlessly unpolitic incursions into offline media. But none of that matters: Google's search advertising business is like a nuclear furnace at its heart; and Yahoo's prospects looks cold.
