NICK DENTON — If it ever seems that my loathing of the bubble is pathological, there's a simple explanation: it is. I was traumatized, in my entrepreneurial childhood. One Tuesday in 1998, with some friends, I threw a cocktail party for other people on London's nascent internet scene. The first few events, dubbed First Tuesday after the monthly schedule, were fun, exciting even — until the true believers were displaced by carpetbaggers, opportunists, lawyers and consultants; the cocktail party morphed into a ramshackle business spanning dozens of cities, embodying the worst of Europe's boomtime greed, which we raced to sell before the bubble, and First Tuesday, burst. Now the internet is back, and the nightmare with it. I was just passed an email trailing a launch event later this year, sent to the old mailing list. The pitch is ominous. "Remember us?" asks First Tuesday's Christer Holloman. "We certainly remember you."
Mm, it is a Tuesday evening. Feels like something is missing.
Remember us? We certainly remember you.
