The New York Times has given over an unusually large end-to-end box on its home page above its news content to Apple, for an ad [click to enlarge]. It's not the first time this has happened. Not only does this type of thing provoke journalism purists to wonder whether the paper of record is losing its perspective on the editorial/ advertising divide; it also makes Gov. Bill Richardson look like he's going to be crushed by a giant apple.

That's at least the second if not the third time Apple has bought that space. The last time I recall it was when PC Dude climbed up a ladder to the top banner.
It was one of the best online ads I've ever seen!
Although it did utterly overwhelm the paper of record and make it look it cnet.com.
Of course, since the ascendancy of Junior, that's not unusual. I never thought I would have lived to see the day that the once omnipotent NY Times served as a punch line in even many progressive circles.
Gotta pay those Red Sox salaries somehow...
The applue should crush Richardson.
Next, they'll rename the paper The New Apple Times.
An apple a day keeps the...
er...I'll leave that one open for someone to finish. It's too early for me.
Does this mean there will be an influx of NYT.com thefts around Williamsburg?
Yeah! Couldn't they have shelled out a little extra and got some chick showing off her ass in American Apparel tights?
Come to think of it, branding the NYT as an Apple product makes perfect sense.
@The Cooler: She's one of the things that gets me through the day
Oh, but there're worse people to see on the homepage of the Times than John Hodgeman, no?
But really, aren't we ALL going to be crushed by a giant Apple eventually?
@McCheeburger: NYTimes.com is not the "paper of record." It's a website.
@McCheeburger: Also, Hodgman and Drew Barrymore's lover aren't exactly "overwhelm"ing.
@4_Chan!!!!!11!one: Not with Mac Airs, they ain't.
@Mike_Jahn: Bill Richardson used to have a political career. Nice knowing ya Bill!
I remember some hubbub with the iPhone ads, which showed how easy it is to scroll through nytimes.com also.
@In Other News...:
ZOMG, you're kidding!?
@McCheeburger: Nope, it's quite obvious. Did you pay $1.75 to read it? If so you should really get your money back.
I don't see ads on the web normally as I use black electrical tape to block them on my computer screen. I have four pieces already cut for when I start surfing and I place them carefully while squinting or looking at the screen out of the corner of my eye to stop me making a rash purchase during the viewing process. My strips are all of equal size and I haven't bought anything off the internet for a long time, apart from 40 rolls of electrical tape, as I find I can only use my ready-cut strips so many times before they begin to lose their natural stickiness and start to fall off while I'm reading an article about rich people spending money or something like that and they land on my keyboard like dead plastic leeches and get in the way of me typing all my emails to David Cassidy. I have special red electrical tape for when there are pop-ups, but I have that on a dispenser because you can never tell what size they are, or when they are going to appear and I have to be quick on the dispenser, and both fluid and calm in my movements in case I crack another computer screen again. If I find a pop-under has arrived I use a sheet of cardboard with a picture of a lemur on it to block it when I close my browser while clicking frantically in the area I guess is the top right-hand corner. I find my prompt actions has enriched my internet experience and saved me countless of dollars in untold amounts this month alone.
The same fate should befall all New Mexicans.
One could point out the same thing, with an even more elaborate ad, on Gizmodo.
FYI Apple has also taken over The Wall Street Journal website. Is Apple slowly taking over every media aspect ?
It looks like a headline. Before it loaded, I thought, "Wow, something big must have happened for that huge headline that's gonna go there!"
@In Other News...:
ZOMG, again! I did pay for that newspaper and -- WTF-- the exact same articles -- albeit fewer of them -- appear on that website.
Somebody should really look into that.
(And by that I mean the 13-year-old's brain inhabiting your skull.)
"You expected a headline here? THINK DIFFERENT."
You can turn the ad off and get to the default site here:
[www.nytimes.com]
@MisterHippity:
@MisterHippity: Why yes, I did create that myself. What's that? Yes, believe it or not, I'm supposedly "working" on Good Friday. But, uh ... I took an early lunch.
@MisterHippity: The fact that you even know it's Good Friday means you're head and shoulders above the crowd, Mister Hipty. ( You must be another recovering Catholic, no?)Here in Madrid we're on day 2 of a long weekend.
And seeing "Times" and "Apple" in the same post makes we with that Johnny Apple would come back to life and chew Pinch to death, lightly grilled with a bourbon marinade.
@VirusWithShoes: Whatever you do, don't scroll!
@McCheeburger: Are you okay over there?
@MisterHippity: Hah! What people can do with a Mac. I mean, Paint!
@In Other News...: I've glued the scroller thingy down to stop temptation.
Anyway, I've found that the best things on the internet are usually at the top of the screen.
VirusWithShoes: God bless for the DIY screen ad blocking lesson. Will implement immediately! Any tips on tape brands for laptop screens?
@VirusWithShoes: Some of the best stuff is at the bottom of the screen - "Site Map", "About Us", "Contact Us", "Legal" and "Attention Webmasters" is downright compelling.
@pwik: Standard PVC tape, and perhaps use the green/yellow earth combi colours, to remind you that you're not using a desktop PC. For God's sake don't use double-sided tape, as you'll have difficulty opening your laptop again.
@In Other News...: Most of those sound too narcissistic for my tastes. Although "Attention Webmasters" sounds erotic, in an S&M kinda way.
@VirusWithShoes: Now that I think about it, "Attention Webmasters" is at the bottom of a lot of websites linked to Fleshbot. Um! Not that I would know. Per se.
@SarahHeartburn: that was, "makes me wish that.."serious rheumatic problems making my hands do funny things...
It just looks like Bill Richardson took a bite, then spit the apple out. Must not have had enough candy coating on it for him.
