Last Saturday was the third annual New York City Pillow Fight in Union Square. Hooray for the relentless twee-ification of New York! Improv Everywhere is to blame for this, somehow. Anyhow, Gawker Videographer Alex Goldberg attended, and filmed the melee. If, like us, you wondered why you saw fresh-faced youngsters clutching pillows out and about in Manhattan on Saturday night, this should clear things up.

Explains the Dixie cups.
I hate cute.
someone should slip a few full coke cans in their pillowcase like sean penn did in "bad boys". that'll thin the herd.
From now on I'm spending Saturday night safe inside, sitting alone with my thoughts. And yes, I use my right hand for that.
Otherwise known as "Pickpocket Mardi Gras."
Welcome to my hell.
I was there. My pillow was the one with the brick in it.
Any notion of cute died in my head when I saw a trail of college students running out of Bed, Bath and Beyond with pillows and receipts.
Is this the same group that does the Santa Claus shopping cart racing thing or whatever that is? I'll stick to drinking.
@harumph: Were this the unpussified New York of the pre-1990s, you could bet there'd be at least a handful of kids with pillowcases full of doorknobs or pennies.
@harumph: @Cheap Shot: I was the one with a bar of soap wrapped in a towel. Just call me Private Pyle.
I have long thought that if we could have bumpers all around our cars like they do at the carnival, the world would be a much happier place. This on the other hand is just stupid.
Spain has La Tomatina and the Running of the Bulls. And we have...this.
Guess the dollar isn't the only thing weak by comparison in Europe.
I'm moving to Camden. Who's with me?
@Furious George: yeah, i see kids doing fake swordfighting in mccarren park and i can't help but remember a time when they would have been literally preyed upon for that kind of cuteness. same goes for the kickball dorks and the a-holes on the 10 foot high bicycles.
what happened to my city where it was inadvisable to bring attention to oneself?
[tear rolls down face]
Reason #840 to end the L at Ave C.
Where are the suicide bombers when you need them?
the worst was the feathery aftermath that coated the whole south side of USq. People in whole foods were picking feathers off of themselves in the express line. ick
oh come on. Deep down you know you wanted to be swallowed up in that wave of down and quilt goodness.
It's too bad this wasn't scheduled a day later. All those downy white feathers floating around would've really fit in with the Christian Israelite Church's messages of hate!!
And people wonder why there's a bed bugs problem in NYC.
Everyone in this photo is so all about ultimate frisbee.
Improv Everywhere didn't organize this -- it was organized by Newmindspace.
I was a participant, but it actually wasn't as much fun as I thought it would be -- too many overly-rambunctious teenagers making it a feather-infested mosh pit. And by the way, I am definitely not a hipster (most of the people there weren't old enough to be considered hipsters, either).
@harumph: I am totally with you on that. Some jackass just moved into my neighborhood and insists on riding a unicycle everywhere. A unicycle! I tend to hope that he will fall off the thing into traffic where some terrible accident will befall him.
@Gwinny: what the hell did you THINK this event was going to be?
This might've sucked, but some of the Improv Everywhere stuff is pretty entertaining:
+ Watch video
@allyzay: I don't know... I guess I thought it would be more like the Bubble Battle that they do.
@sassypants: that about sums it up.
The Warriors would be so ashamed.
There was a time you could score some pretty good acid on Saturday in that park. This is so pathetic.
Steve Jobs releases the iPillow.
That was a lot of fun.
