Tracey Ullman, that talented comedienne who is also kind of annoying, has a new Showtime sketch show. On it, she imitates Arianna Huffington, that brilliant blog-promoter who is also kind of ridiculous. A brief clip is attached—the impression is impeccable (and looks quite friendly, jokes about celebrity hairstylists "blogging brilliantly" aside). It's no "Breakaway," but it's nice to see Ullman's keeping busy.

I thought Rachel Ray was Tracey Ullman's new character.
Uh, I don't get it. Was that funny?
@richardmarxhatesmyhair: no, it was Tracy Ullman.
she was great on fresh air yesterday - too bad terry gross is horrendously embarrassing interviewer - she thought she might play armchair shrink by delving into the death of ullman's dad at the age of eight - awkward.
I heard her on Terry Gross last night, and she totally harshed on bloggers!
@lawyergay: It broke my heart in 17 places.
@DavidWatts: @richardmarxhatesmyhair:
Oh, go home, just go home!
She used to be on HBO. It was funny.
The only reason Tracey Ullman matters is that her show gave birth to the Simpsons. Other than that -- she has never, not once, made me or anyone I know laugh out loud. Truly inexplicable how she continues to get gigs...
Ullman has the same problem that a lot of comic performers do: it's hard to find material that's worthy of their talents. John Cleese comes to mind. Jimmy Kimmel doesn't.
@donmiguel: She and Lily Tomlin are part of the laughless comedy school.
@ginger rant: I don't know, I think there is plenty of boring unfunny shit out there that's perfectly suited to her "talents."
@onebadclam: Lily Tomlin was great in all her Altman films and 9 to 5. I remember asking my father what "Maui Wowwee" was...she at least made me laugh as a kid.
Seriously? Tracey is one of the nicest, most down to earth people in showbiz. And yes, because of her, we got The Simpsons. And for that we should be thankful.
Tracey Ullman's impressions and characters are often dead on, but they don't always make me laugh.
@richardmarxhatesmyhair: If we drag Altman into this we'll be arguing all night. I found Tomlin funny in the Laugh-In format but once on Broadway her comedy was sacrificed for her "craft". Ullman strikes me the same way. And Ullman's trans-gender characterizations just creep me out.
Having said that - YAY for the Simpsons (except for the last 10 seasons).
@onebadclam: Wow. You no likey the Simpsons in the last decade. You're certainly a comedy outlier -- statistically speaking.
We call it "Nine Eleven" in this country, Tracey. Otherwise, spot on.
I agree she can be a touch annoying but...aren't you guys a little mad because she went on Fresh Air yesterday and described bloggers as (and I paraphrase) "the fat, lazy kids on the bleachers in gym class talking snarky crap about the people actually doing the gymnastics"? And that she wanted to beat you up?
Cuz I LOL'ed at that.
@ObtuseIntolerant: I'll accept the fat, lazy kid in the bleachers description if she'll admit to being an attention-seeking drill team dancer who would only bang a star footballer.
@donmiguel: Really? I thought it was a common opinion that the writing took a nosedive years ago and has never recovered. Still funnier than Family Guy, though.
Her Renee Zellweger on the new show is bang-on, and the Dina Lohan is so scathing that I wonder whether she'll get sued.
@onebadclam: Ha!
Actually she described her child self as a "little troll".
Fair enough?
@donmiguel: I loved The Tracey Ullman show. One of the best collections of "character study" comedy. I am not kidding. Kay, Steve Martin as a dance teacher doing "skin the duck", Ginny Tillman and the proctologist, Francesca with the braces...
@Carol Gardens: Omigughghghg--Francesca! Forgot all about her. Tender teen trying to navigate both adolescence and having two gay dads--TV's first? I always wanted Francesca and her dads to spin off into their own show; all I got was fucking Fraser.
I love her. Sometimes I'll trade being amazed for being amused.
