In a cost-cutting move that is, frankly, kind of sad, the DC bureau of the legendary Hearst Newspapers chain has moved into the same office space as McClatchy's DC bureau [E&P]. "They just have a small area in the back of our offices, they have three rows of work stations," a McClatchy manager said. Your front line watchdogs of democracy, ladies and gentlemen. Among the new denizens of the cramped, back office workspace is 87 year-old Hearst columnist and prime Bush tormentor Helen Thomas. She really deserves better. But, death of print and all that. Below, a classic news conference clip of Thomas questioning the president about the Iraq war, to his discomfort.

What Hearst should do is give Helen an advice column in Seventeen. That would justify an office. Everyone knows that teens are desperate for the wisdom of an elderly Washington reporter.
Yo! Hearst can start a war and McClatchy can get a Pulitzer for covering it! Talk about synergy.
"Oceans and previous diplomacy". And lion and tigers and bears.
Were there any justice in this world, Helen Thomas would be kept in a cage made out of chicken wire.
He knows about the oceans! Who was whispering in his ear???
You want to talk about shabby, that White House press room has seen better days. The carpet is all gross and the seats look like they belong in my high school. Although it is cool that Helen Thomas is one of the few people with a nameplate on her chair (a lot of them are marked for the network, and the ones in the back are unmarked).
Also, little known fact - the press room was built by Kennedy on top of FDR's swimming pool.
The sadder-than-a-cancer-kid state of newspapers today makes me think the golden age of Hearst/Pulitzer wasn't really as bad as my earnest J-school professors made it sound.
Oh noes. They weren't completely objective!!! They even used their papers to push, gasp, Political Agendas!
Helen Thomas is pretty much a perfect manifestation of the current state of print media.
Who'll die first: print or Helen Thomas?
I met Helen Thomas once. Her great nephew and I went to the same school.
She'll always have an office IN MY HEART.
The positive side of this is that when they make you buy your own office supplies? You can use the pens with shiny, purple ink and they can't say anything about it.
Helen Thomas should get an internship at Teen Vogue and start rooming with Heidi Montag.
Any media organization that keeps that old bag on the payroll as part of their Washington bureau is by definition incompetent.
@rabbitboy: Damn, that's an idea that could sell! It could be a series with major cross-over appeal, perfect for CBS, who wouldn't offend their Olds but would gain some of them young'uns.
I like how after Bush gives an awful answer, and then calls on someone else to avoid Helen having any follow-up questions, they all have a good chuckle. Warms your heart.
The only thing Bush wants to hear from Helen Thomas is the name of her hairdresser.
@CaptainHangNail: Helen Thomas should have her own comic book and Saturday morning cartoon.
