I believe this is known as 'culture jamming'.
It was invented in Vancouver in 1994.
I understand this is actually Banksy's younger brother, trying to leave his own mark (and mystique) on the city.
@Flashman: Nah, I think this guy's stuff has a more abstract touch than your average culture jammer. Their m.o. is a lil less subtle.

I do this all the time. I will like see an ad, it will say "mcdonalds is delicious".
Where I work my magic, you see, I cross out "delicious" and replace it with "awful".
