London Police Protect Scientology From Teen's Sign

anonymous2.jpegThe Brits are rather less enthusiastic about the whole "free speech" concept than the US is. A 15-year-old kid was holding a sign that said "Cult" at one of the Anonymous protests against Scientology in London. The precocious young scalawag had even memorized a 1984 UK court ruling in which a judge called the science fiction-based religion a "cult." But the police gave him a summons and confiscated his dangerous slogan-bearing poster, and now he has to go to court to defend himself.

A spokeswoman for the force said today: "City of London police had received complaints about demonstrators using the words 'cult' and 'Scientology kills' during protests against the Church of Scientology.

"Following advice from the Crown Prosecution Service some demonstrators were warned verbally and in writing that their signs breached section five of the Public Order Act.

Civil rights groups are justifiably outraged. But it turns out the London police have a history of supporting the wacky church:

The City of London police came under fire two years ago when it emerged that more than 20 officers, ranging from constable to chief superintendent, had accepted gifts worth thousands of pounds from the Church of Scientology.

The City of London Chief Superintendent, Kevin Hurley, praised Scientology for "raising the spiritual wealth of society" during the opening
of its headquarters in 2006.

Last year a video praising Scientology emerged featuring Ken Stewart, another of the City of London's chief superintendents, although he is not a member of the group.

  • Ya hear that Scientologists? London is an awesome place for you to live. Don't forget to write.

  • Nah. The CPS would have to be insane to have to go forward with this. Also, the City of London Police are idiots, for real. And, judging by their praise for Scientology, for make believe too.

@nevin: Isn't the newly elected mayor of London something of a clown? Fits.

  • @Mike_Jahn: Something of a Clown? That's like saying GWB is something of a moran (sic).

  • The statement "the Brits are rather less enthusiastic about the whole 'free speech' concept than the US is" is a very polite understatement. We don't have a constitution like you guys, and our civil rights have been severely weakened since the "War on Terror" began. So we have to go about fighting for each silly case. Glad to see you folks over the pond don't approve either. The Germans (quite rightly) laugh at our stupidity for letting this happen.

  • Well, the London police certainly didn't protect the Jedi Order from Darth Vader.

  • worth thousands of pounds of what?

  • epic fail

@Mike_Jahn: They busted him once, too, when he was trying to lead a protest against closing community hospitals. And they threatened to arrest him another time, when he was leading a girls school protest about...I dunno, something. Who doesn't like girls schools? And he was wearing a toga that time. I think they spared him because they didn't want to know what was under there.

  • Here's Lorne L. Dawson and his book "Comprehending Cults" which contains an absolutely relevant new religious movement sociologist's entirely well founded opinion about Scientology, which I quote below.

    [tinyurl.com]

Lorne L. Dawson, in his book "Comprehending Cults",LorneL.Dawson, Oxford Univ Press, 1998, p31-32, states:

"...most of the cults studied in any depth during the recent controversy about NRMs [New Religious Movements] are actually atypical. Scienotlogy, Krishna Consciousness, and the Unification Church, for example, are relatively long-lived and relatively large. Accordingly, many of their features are rather sect-like. They are
more highly organized and are more ideologically and practically sophisticated in their relations with the larger world. And except in the case of the Unificiation Church, they have managed to survive the death of their charismatic leader. Originally, though, each of these
groups displayed markedly the traits of a cult. Moreover, they continue to display many cult-like attitutdes and practices, such as the emphasis on esoteric teachings and the satisfaction of individual needs. Perhaps, then, yet another category should be added to the church-sect typology, that of 'established cult'."

THE POINT IS SCIENTOLOGY IS CATEGORIZED AS AN ESTABLISHED CULT. That shoe fits Scientology in this expert's opinion!

  • It's quite sad if London police is no longer able to read the laws of its country.
Perhaps the robotized policemen there think that if soime people treat scientology for what it is, a cult, other citizens could treat extremist islamists as a cult or worse, as a crime-generating association, a qualification that some members could use a a cause to retaliate and bomb the metro? UK should take a look at what happens in other Eu countries, and determine if the kingdom is indeed becoming one of the most repressive country of the world, just after Birmania, Saudi Arabia etc...
