"former?" Is she no longer with the show?

evermore tiresome Hilton Als is another reason I'm ignoring the NYker's constant renewal notices. Each of his shoulders balances a room-size chip, one re gender, one re color. Booooooooring.

Unfortunate usage of "Barthesian blank" in an article written after 1974. He could have "younged it down" about 20 years by opting for the following:

The nice thing about Vanna White is that she doesn't pretend to be anything but the babe who turns letters on Wheel of Fortune. Or did I miss her Op Ed pieces?

Perhaps he was using "former" in the sense that she no longer actually turns the letters thanks to fabulous advances in game show technology.

@Michael Jahn: Agreed. There is something very refreshing about the fact that she is happy to get rich by just smiling and looking nice -- and not make any more of it than that.

@Ummwhat: Is that true. Does she no longer soil her Revlon on the actual letters? Damn. Next there will be electonic voting booths.
