New Yorker's Hilton Als Totally Wants to Get With Vanna White

Vanna White 150BIn the new New Yorker, awesome theater critic Hilton Als writes of former Wheel of Fortune letter-turner Vanna White, " White is a perfect Barthesian blank: blond and white, with little if any reference to ethnicity, let alone history." He sure knows how to charm the ladies! [NY'er]

Note: Woah, she's still with the show. The show is still going on. This is mind-blowing for some reason to me.

  • "former?" Is she no longer with the show?

  • evermore tiresome Hilton Als is another reason I'm ignoring the NYker's constant renewal notices. Each of his shoulders balances a room-size chip, one re gender, one re color. Booooooooring.

  • Unfortunate usage of "Barthesian blank" in an article written after 1974. He could have "younged it down" about 20 years by opting for the following:

"White is the perfect Derridean text, offering up the illusion of control and sign stability while simultaneously undermining it; a radical turning of letters that shifts meaning away from the game's center, the word she is revealing, to a different signifier, the transfer of capital, a transfer which occurs outside the text, incapable of subjugating it as is always the goal of capital, and unable to disturb the spectacle of the feminine form as a product to be consumed; for the contestant/reader, White is unattainable."

The nice thing about Vanna White is that she doesn't pretend to be anything but the babe who turns letters on Wheel of Fortune. Or did I miss her Op Ed pieces?

  • Perhaps he was using "former" in the sense that she no longer actually turns the letters thanks to fabulous advances in game show technology.

  • @Michael Jahn: Agreed. There is something very refreshing about the fact that she is happy to get rich by just smiling and looking nice -- and not make any more of it than that.

@Ummwhat: Is that true. Does she no longer soil her Revlon on the actual letters? Damn. Next there will be electonic voting booths.

  • @Michael Jahn: True. She touches them and the letter lights up.
