He thought himself a "high roller," a genuine player. Although, in the big world of men who frequent pricey prostitutes, there are thousands of men who could easily have bought and sold Spitzer a million times over.

Spitzer was too giddy about how far he'd come up in the world, too dizzy about the fact that he could afford a $5K-per-night hooker, that he never bothered to do his basic "Consumer Reports" cost/benefit research about the world of hiring $5K-per-night hookers.

Such is the frequent fate of the arriviste: an attraction to the dazzle, without any thought to the dazzle's context.

But it does beg the larger question - should there be industry standards for diamond-rating our nation's whore supply? Should ISO perhaps, or maybe FASB get involved?
