City Of Tomorrow

Modern Mechanix has scanned in the National Geographic spread about the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Examine this image of Futurama, a model of a city of skyscrapers and parks above freeways on which electronic controls keep the speeding cars at a safe distance from eachother. The sponsor, unsurprisingly, was General Motors. It's particularly poignant: a vision of a car-centric and history-free metropolis which was soon to be discredited by Jane Jacobs and her urbanist followers, on display in a city which was about to become a byword for filth and crime, sponsored by a former industrial icon which is now a pension plan with a shrinking automaking division.
