Walter 'Killer' Kowalski, Wrestler

Old Timey wrestler Walter "Killer" Kowalski died yesterday of a heart attack in Everett, Mass. He was 81. Though he came to prominence pretty much at the dawn of television, after he retired from wrestling in 1977 he founded a pro-wrestling school in Boston that turned out 1980s bad guy Big John Studd and, later, Triple H. He was also pals with manager and Cyndi Lauper associate Captain Lou Albano. By all accounts, he was the gentle variety of giant-and a vegetarian-at 6'7" and about 275 pounds. Though he once tore a dude's ear off during a match, it was an accident. Such things happen in the squared circle! A lifelong bachelor, he first married at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife and brother. [NYT and WWE]
