Breitbart told us in a phone interview that he's going to war with biased old-media — and even new media types, from The New York Times to Anderson Cooper to the Huffington Post
— with his new site.
He said: "I'm trying to fill a huge market void for original reporting and fact based journalism" for the "silent minority around the world" (that would be the right).
"This metaphorical warfare. This is not real bombs, but this is word bombs."
Breitbart helped Arianna Huffington launch Huffington Post as "primary developer." "My sites offer truth," he said, and her sites offer a leftist slant.* "I'm very happy to be in competition with HuffPost, TPM," he said. "I honestly don't read those sites."
Big Journalism is staking the claim that media is now at war with one another: Big Media versus Small Media; Old Media versus New Media; Left Media Vs Right Media. You get the picture. The practice of journalism will never be the same, and not the New York Times's Pinch Sulzberger nor all the sniping children at Gawker and Media Matters can un-ring this bell – which, after all, tolls for them.
If the media isn't going to take the large clues of losing subscribers, dwindling viewers, thriving alternatives – perhaps something more aggressive will instigate a change for the better.
We sent a message to Arianna Huffington asking for a response to Breitbart's comment. We have yet to hear back.
*UPDATE: We previously published a quote from Breitbart referring to Huffington's sites as "leftist sin." We also wrote that he doesn't read Politico. Breitbart disputes ever saying these things, so we've rephrased it.
