Meet Amber, a nineteen year old college freshman with a debilitating genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis that affects her nervous system and one very big dream: to wear a pair of skinny jeans. Video of her heart-warming tale inside.
Neurofibromatosis—or NF—is a disease which causes tumors to grow at any time on any part of your body. I'd never heard of it before tonight—as I'm sure a lot of people watching hadn't—but it looks and sounds as awful as you'd think. Though the other two subjects of tonight's NF-focused True Life also had amazing stories to share it was Amber's that really stole the show. After watching her father undergo surgery to get rid of some NF tumors of his own, Amber headed to Austin to get a large tumor on her torso removed. After years of having doctors tell her they couldn't, she finally found a doctor who would consent to the procedure and put her one step closer to her making her sartorial dream a reality.
And, alas! Success! The tumor was removed! And through the magic of
modern medicine, our girl Amber would finally get the chance to have the body and pants she'd always dreamed of.
It may not seem like much, but a big part of the reason why this story is so great is because, hey, who doesn't like a good pair of skinny jeans? And to see a girl who is kind and ambitious and so clearly devoted to her family successfully fight a disease like NF and get the pants of her dreams? Well, let's just say I'm going to need to run out and get another box of kleenex in the morning.
