Lena Horne, the jazz singer and Broadway star, died in New York on Sunday. Horne was among the first black singers to cross over to white audiences or lead a white band, and later became a prominent civil rights activist.

"Stormy Weather," the title song of the 1943 musical, was her signature song, and one she used to great effect in her 1981 one-woman show, The Lady and Her Music. This is the original performance, from the 20th Century Fox film:
