In your trenchant Tuesday media column: Fox Business Network exists for a reason, the NYT expands its online opinion section, Fortune gets theme-y, Politico guy hates the Twitter, and Michael Wolff, explained.
- Hahaha: the executive VP of Fox Business Network was forced to send a memo to his employees earlier this month reminding them to try to cover business once in a while, rather than just taking the "100% political shit-stirring" path of Fox News. "I understand the temptation to imitate our sibling network in hopes of imitating its success, but we cannot...If we give the audience a choice between FNC and the almost-FNC, they will choose FNC every time. Earnings, taxes, jobs etc give us PLENTY to chew on." I dunno, business news on Fox Business Network? With all the businesspeople watching CNBC, I don't see the point.
- The NYT is adding to its online opinion section: a new blog by Op-Ed editor Andy Rosenthal (how many opinions does that guy have?), a "weekly map series by Frank Jacobs," online columns by Ezekiel Emanuel and Diane Ackerman, video content, and some other stuff. That's all nice. But none of it solves the columnist problem.
- Oh Christ: starting next year, Fortune magazine plans to "have editorial features for all 18 of its issues," meaning that every god damn issue will essentially be a "theme" issue. At least they're not relying on gimmickry.
- Politico guy Jim VandeHei has never written one single Tweet and he thinks Twitter sucks up time that reporters should use on reporting. That's where you and I agree, Jim. My only tweet ever is "Politico suxxx." I think I'll leave it alone now.
