Live Blogging Project Runway All Stars, The Season Premiere

Post-holiday blues got you down? Well tonight, prepare to get your spirits raised by a visitation from three wise men bearing gifts of talent and fabulosity: Austin Scarlett, Mondo Guerra, and Anthony "Suzanne Sugarbaker" Williams. They're part of the new "all-star" edition of Project Runway that premieres tonight, and we're live-blogging it in the comments. Join us!

If you haven't participated in one of our live blogs before, it's easy: Just turn on your TV, watch the show (which airs at 9 pm Eastern on Lifetime) and post witty observations about it in the comments section below this post. The rest of us will be doing the same. It's like one big divine conception of snark!

In this all-star season, 13 former contestants will return to try to rekindle some of their sewing-room glories of seasons past. Among them, Anthony has special significance for this live blog, since he actually joined us here on Gawker and helped us live-blog one of the episodes during Season 8—the season in which we gave him the "Suzanne Sugarbaker" nickname and he became our favorite contestant ever. (I hear he may even make a return to this live blog in the future!) As for Mondo, a notable aspect of his return will be the "chance to claim the crown he was robbed of last time" storyline it offers, given that the horror of "Gretchengate" is probably still fresh in the minds of many fans. The complete list of returning designers can be found on Lifetime's website for those interested in perusing it before tonight's episode begins.

Unfortunately, there some notable absentees —and I'm not talking about designers, as much as it would have been nice to see folks like Christian Siriano, Laura Bennett, and Santino Rice again. Rather, the traditional mentor-host-judge-judge quartet of Tim Gunn, Heidi Klum, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia won't appear in this version of the show—having been replaced in those respective roles by Marie-Claire Editor-in-Chief Joanna Coles, model Angela Lindvall, and designers Isaac Mizrahi and Georgina Chapman (whose husband Harvey Weinstein is an executive producer of the show). Personally, as much as I like Kors, Klum, and Garcia, I could have lived just fine with the replacement of all three if they could only have brought back the Great Mr. Gunn – whose absence, according to Gunn himself, was unintentionally precipitated by a scheduling problem. Curse your incompetence, Weinstein Co.!

But enough dwelling on the negative—I want us all to think happy thoughts about this season! Repeat after me: Mondo, Austin, Anthony, hooray! Also, tonight we can look forward to doing all that fun stuff we typically tackle at the start of a new season, such as:

  • Assigning nicknames: We can revive the monikers we coined for some of these designers during our past live blogs of Seasons 5 through 8, and invent new names for the designers from pre-live-blog seasons. To get the ball rolling, I suggest that we repurpose two nicknames of yore by referring to Kenley Collins and Mila Hermanovski as "Bangs the Younger" and "Bangs the Elder," respectively—assuming that both still wear their hair in bangs.
  • Predicting winners; Mondo is probably the odds-on favorite to win it all this time, given his talent and the "he wuz robbed " emotional factor. But I also recommend keeping an eye on Jarell Scott, who is my "dark horse" pick to pull off an upset victory. I base this on a past-performance analysis I did, which revealed that, aside from Mondo, Jarell had the most prior-season success of any all-star contestant—namely, six top-three finishes and three elimination-challenge wins during his original stint back in 2007. (Gawker did a very spoiler heavy post about the supposed winners if you're interested in possibly ruining the outcome of the season.)
  • Inventing drinking-game rules: For example, we could drink every time they show a prior-season flashback clip, or Elisa Jimenez spits on something.

OK gang, it's nearly 9 pm—time to head down to the comments and start following yonder stars! I'll see you there!
