Piers Morgan Defends Kirk Cameron's Right to Be a Dick

Child star turned religious zealot Kirk Cameron pissed a lot of people off when he appeared on Piers Morgan Tonight and said gays were icky. (Technically he called homosexuality "unnatural," but now we're just splitting hairs.) His basic point was that gay marriage should never be legal, because God intended marriage as a one-man, one-woman deal.

Unsurprisingly, GLAAD was one of the first groups to issue a strong response.

In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character. Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans ... with an increasing number of states recognizing marriage equality, Americans are seeing that marriage is about committed couples who want to make a lifelong promise to take care of and be responsible for each other and that gay and lesbian couples need equal security and legal protections. That's not "redefining" anything.

Last night, TMZ ambushed Piers Morgan to ask about his thoughts on Cameron's statements. Using what was maybe not the best word choice, Morgan called Cameron's strict adherence to his morals "brave." Instead of bowing to societal pressure, as many would have, Morgan noted that Cameron "was honest to what he believed."

Of course, the bravery and honesty of one's beliefs are suspect when said beliefs include thinking all gay people are going to hell. Nevertheless, Morgan insists that Cameron has a right to his opinions, which he admits many would find "antiquated." No word on why Morgan felt the need to give Cameron a platform to air his bigotry, but at least we know how he feels about doing so.
