Here's what we know about the shooter: still very little. Although the shooter was initially identified as Ryan Lanza, the Connecticut State Police won't yet identify his identity because there continues to be an "active ongoing investigation" with "a lot of things we cannot confirm or discuss yet." The Post is reporting that the shooter was actually Adam Lanza, Ryan's brother.
As of 3:45 pm today, the local police have confirmed these details:
- 18 children and six adults were found dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Two other children were transported to the hospital and died.
- The shooter is deceased in the school.
- There is a secondary crime scene in Newtown, Connecticut, where an unidentified adult is deceased.
- The shootings were concentrated in one area of the school, two rooms.
CNN is reporting that the suspected Newtown shooter's name is Ryan Lanza, who is in his 20s. The gunman, who had four weapons and an assault vest, was the father of an elementary student, according to CBS, from New Jersey. Connecticut State Police spokesman Paul Vance has confirmed the shooter is deceased inside the building.
The AP has reported that the gunman in the Connecticut school shootings is a twentysomething man with ties to the school:
The official said that a gun used in the attacks is a .223-caliber rifle. The official also said that New Jersey state police are searching a location in that state in connection with the shootings, said by an official in Connecticut to have left 27 dead, including 18 children.
ABC News Radio is hearing that a first-grade classroom was targeted, but officials haven't confirmed this yet.
We will keep updating as this develops.
