Perhaps while browsing Twitter this morning, you noticed that #LiamAteNiallsPants was trending nationwide. Uhh what's that, you thought to yourself. Liam sounds like a name...but what are niallspants...should I eat them..? I'm old. (You're old).
In short, the nonsensical-but-slightly-sexual hashtag #LiamAteNiallsPants is trending because One Direction's tween fans—a populous species unto themselves—are bored as hell.
Every so often, fans of the U.K. boy band get together to trend "bullshit" hashtags (their words). Hashtags that don't really mean anything but are ostensibly "funny." Because-they-can hashtags. Self-professed leaders of the fandom, who have tens of thousands of Twitter followers themselves, pick a hashtag and put the word out to "trend it." Then legions of 1D fans, who should really be in school or something, oblige.
Twitter users @1D5sosDdlovato and @5sos1dtrends took credit for #LiamAteNiallsPants this morning. @1D5sosDdlovato's bio reads: "i like trending weird stuff :) yay."
The hashtag itself is meaningless. Liam and Niall are members of One Direction. Wouldn't it be funny if Liam ate Niall's pants? I guess so.
If you are interested in participating in the next bullshit hashtag trend, the tweens are accepting applications.
