Oscar Pistorius was not mentally ill when he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, according to a court-ordered assessment released last week. He is now traumatized because of the killing, however, and suffers from depression and PTSD. According to a new psych report compiled for the court, he "will become an increasing suicide risk unless he continues to get mental health care."
Throughout the trial, Pistorius has shown signs of distress, sometimes vomiting and wailing in court. The defense has alleged that he has a sleep disorder and a hand tremor. The trial was put on hold for most of May so that Pistorius could be psychologically evaluated.
Pistorius maintains that he shot Steenkamp through a closed bathroom door last year because he believed there was an intruder in the house. He faces 25 years to life in prison if he's found guilty of premeditated murder, but he could get a lighter sentence if the defense can prove he did not plan to kill Steenkamp.
