Detroit Councilman Leads Cops on Chase, Has Weed in Car, Goes FreeS

George Cushingberry Jr. is probably flying high today, and not just because of the Bubba Kush he brought home from the strip club. The recently elected Detroit City Council president pro tem got off with just a ticket after taking the cops for a ride with pot and open liquor in his car.

It all went down about 10 p.m. Tuesday night, after Cushingberry and a friend left the gentlemen's club, according to the Detroit News:

According to sources, the officers gave chase after almost being hit, but the councilman did not stop. Another squad car was called in to help with the chase.

The source said officers finally stopped Cushingberry's car and spotted the open alcohol container and smelled marijuana.

"When they finally stopped him, he took off again," the source said. "Then, he was stopped a second time and (Cushingberry) flashed his City Council ID card. There was another guy in the car who had a medical marijuana card, but it doesn't matter; you're not allowed to smoke in the car. A supervisor came over and put the kibosh on it, and issued a ticket for failure to signal. The officers did exactly what they were supposed to do."

The police department is investigating how Cushingberry got off without being arrested. He had made waves earlier on Tuesday after the News published an editorial critical of him and he told the paper in a Facebook comment to "go to Hell."

Fellow council member Saunteel Jenkins told the News that Cushingberry's spree was just what Detroit didn't need: "After all that this city has gone through at this time in our history, it's more important than ever to have elected officials to serve with the utmost integrity."

But a Detroit-based political analyst reminded the paper that, hey, this is Detroit, you know? Behavior like this "always damaging," he said. "Is it career ending? No."
