In regard to the last, yes, the Four Hundred and the Social Register and New York Society Noblesse Oblige (Let them wear couture) and the Ladies Who Lunch and the Social X-rays (stupid epithet, I don't care who coined it) were all enormous jokes, but, as a New Yorker, they were my standing jokes and part of my birthright.
