Blogger Addy Fox, who is dating a Googler, took advantage of her beef's two allotted monthly visitor passes and checked up on the accuracy of our assessment of the Googleplex, which we'd found shockingly crappy. She discovered that we were wrong about some things—for instance, the cafeteria is on the 8th floor, not the 16th (I'm bad with numbers!). But we were right when we assumed that the cold chicken wings and tragicomic sushi weren't representative of usual Google fare: "They have an actual sushi chef in one of the cafeterias who made me a truly delicious spicy tuna roll ... then, as we took our trays out onto the terrace, we were greeted by a buffet of tasty 'Mexican Street Food,' complete with mango and tutifruiti soda." Yum yum. But you know what's not so delicious? RACISM.
There are no black people at Google. I saw one throughout my entire tour, (other than the man I mentioned outside of the elevator,) and he might have been visiting too. Indians, Asians, Canadians: yes. African Americans: no. Really. Forget about China. Somebody call Al Sharpton.Um, RING RING!

Comments
DON'T CALL AL SHARPTON. first find out if there are any black people (maybe TAN and Tionne?) who actually want to work at Google.
Contrary to popular beef, not everyone wants to be in the HOUSE.
How many comments will it take for "soul food" to come up in correlation with the Google cafeteria?
What about the mailroom?
You have reached the voicemail of AL SHARPTON, BITCH. Al is currently BUSTING CRACKA ASS DOWN JENA WAY. Please press 5 to page this person, or wait for the tone to leave a message...
CONTRAry to popular belief, not everyone wants to be in the House.
It's lunchtime and I got beef on my mind.
She stepped into the Google cafeteria... and saw the future of Manhattan.
You gotta give her credit, it's not everyone who can ID Canadians by sight.
No self respecting black person would work at a company with a wack-ass name like Google.
Perhaps they've been sent to Blackle?
I dunno. Have you ever had the seared racism at Jean Georges? They serve it with a sauce béarnaise and haricots verts, and I gotta tell ya: To. Die. For.
@so5minutesago: It's actually Gizzle.com.
I wouldn't specifically complain about Google's lack of imperative for affirmative action. We have serious problems in this country with education, ghettoization, and in some backwards-ass places institutional racism. Those are much harder to write a blog post about, but that's the actual problem.
Sharpton's not an elected official, so unless you're preparing a civil suit I wouldn't know why anyone would call him for any societal problem. Besides, he's currently trying to take down the Dolans for having a "bitch" and "ho"-filled workplace.
Also, I can think of one black person who's at the Googleplex and every plex all day, every day, and his name is Jesus.
I think they're all over at Yahooligans writing wiki's about the Backyardigans
The NYC office seems in no way indicative of a typical Google "campus." I dated a Googler about 2 years ago, and while times may have changed, I doubt life in her LA office is much tougher now than it was back then. They had free meals cooked by gourmet chefs. They had an elaborate employee gym. They had to take a mandatory "20% personal time" per day -- the idea being that, if employees devote about 20% of their time to personal passion projects, Google could later claim intellectual ownership of the fruits of those labors. It's all quite evil and manipulative, in a way reminiscent of the old "company towns" from the 1800s, or perhaps The Matrix. Life seems really sweet, but it's all in service of your dark master.
I never got to visit the Mountain View, CA mega-office, but supposedly it's a veritable shangri-la of decadence and dotcom excess.
Sad.
What do they think they are, an ad agency?
Also, I just googled "African-American" and nothing came up except the cover of "Exile on Main Street."
@grandmoffbastard: I just realized I should clarify: He's a Dominican custodian, and they've been letting him sleep on a cot in one of the storage areas downstairs.
What about Belgians? Are there any Belgians working at Google? Why does everybody hate Belgians so much.
@Ha Ha Sound: Conflict diamonds, and the rape of Africa. Also: Brainy Smurf. Duh.
If you think racism's not delicious, you've obviously never tried fried chicken OR grape soda.
@collegecallgirl: Or even a fried Canadian. With a little soy sauce, they're not half bad.
it's really not so uncommon for sillycon alley offices to be all asian and white. as a yahoo! refugee i can personally attest to the extremity of the color divide, and also to the hostile work environment visited upon the few brown people who dared venture outside their cubicle prisons. and it's the same (even more so) in california.
@nowmedusa: You bump into them and see if they say "soo-ury."
Oh please, Emily. There's a real dearth of women engineers at Google too. Are they racist/sexist in their hiring? Or is it mostly white dudes who happen to be involved in software (and the tech industry as a whole) and applying for the jobs in the first place? I live and work in Silicon Valley and I'm going with the latter. No offense meant here, but stick with what you know-- Manhattan media, not tech. Racism is not a light accusation to make, no matter how "snarky" you're trying to be. IMO you're going too far here.
@grandmoffbastard:
@Cesare_the_Somnambulist:
You actually get some pretty fresh results when you google "black jesus". [www.google.com]
My fave is the wikipedia entry for "jesus", which starts with the sentence "Black Jesus redirects here."
In case some of you aren't caught up on this subject, here's a link to the lyrics of "Why is That" by BDP.

It's because the blacks all work at AskJeeves.
@AnnaBanana: Unless you're black, you should stick to what you know, which, btw, is not The Struggle. Stay in your lane snowbunny.
Wait--many of them donate money to the Gap's (red) campaign, which makes them as African as Gwyneth, Bono, or Richard Gere.
@AnnaBanana: You're a Jezebel reader, yes? Do you know NewToJezebel? She's from the Bay Area too.
@AnnaBanana: I am never, ever, EVER trying to be "snarky." I don't think anyone has tried to be "snarky" since, like, late 2005?
So maybe black and hispanic people don't want to work for a company that helps the Chinese government track and detain (and later use for slave labor) dissidents. Although that does sound like something white people are okay with.
What is up with the Bay Area school system? NTJ and now AnnaBanana? I used to like SF...
@AnnBanana: Mostly White dudes in software? You are probably really on top of things. This is why they outsource software jobs to Iowa, because of the cheap white dues there. Also everytime I call to fix a software problem Chad from New Haven helps, not Patel from Bangor. I hope you fall off a cliff.
@BrotherBillo: Dudes I mean
this reminds me of this time when i was a kid and i swam across a bayou...nevermind...that story's been told already.
@emily: Sorry if i was inaccurate in describing your tone (or just not up-to-date in my terminology.) Were you trying to be completely serious in saying that Google is practicing all-caps "RACISM" in its hiring?
Anyway, I like your writing and posts, which is why I said I meant no offense. And I'm aware that I'm probs being overly sensitive about this-- it's only because of what I do for a living, and because I know how powerful Gawker's impact can be.
@riskybusiness: Actually, I'm not African American-- but I'm not white either, if you must know. So by your (nonsensical) standards this is still my "lane"-- which is probably why I'm being so touchy about it.
Attention Internets: Please be aware that people in the Bay Area offend easily as evidenced by Annabanana. Please be aware that they: have no sense of humor, lack of key chromosomes that prevent mild forms of retardation, and giant sticks in their asses.
@BrotherBillo: You're right. Looking back, I should've said "mostly White and Asian dudes."
@NinaHagen, @BrotherBillo, @lilyb: Is it impossible to have an at all normal or serious dialogue on Gawker without having it get really ugly/immature/personal right away?
@AnnaBanana: You're right. I assume too much. However, I'd like a little more insight. If the lane furthest to the right is designated as "Stuck up light-skinnned bitch think she passin'" and the left-most lane is designated as "Damn, nigga, you so black, black people be like, "you really black mother-fucker", which lane would you be scooting along in?
Just so you know, I'm on the shoulder in handcuffs racking up what will be the DUI that finally forbids me driving legally again.
@AnnaBanana: It's a steep learning curve, this whole Gawker thing. Especially for those in the Bay Area who come from Jezebel. Be patient, read more, comment less. You'll be fine.
Also look up NewtoJezebel's work and the response she got here. It could save you some time and unhappiness.
Attention, Nick Denton: New gossip site for Bay Area Terminally Sincere (BATS): "Mawker."
Unless of course you enjoy NTJ's and Annabanana's contributions to the conversation, in which case gee whiz boy I shore like em too.
I love the Bay Area-I go there every year for a vacation, the restaurants and shopping are both great-but you know what's not great about the Bay Area?
NO SENSE OF HUMOR
Jesus Christ (not the janitor sleeping on a cot in the basement-you know, the other one).
@AnnaBanana: Umm, not really.
@AnnaBanana: Your original comment made no sense, and we are all dumber for having to listen to it. You are awarded no points and may God have mercy on your soul.
@Mediahohoho:
The reason is probably something like a lot of black kids don't have their own computers and aren't encouraged to take AP Computer Science, assuming their high schools offer it. Black geeks still get picked on by some black people and made of fun of and/or treated as if they don't exist by some white people.
The explanation is complex; racism is probably part of it. What isn't is the "purity" of black people. If blacks were too caring to engage in commercial activity that harmed others there'd be no sexist rap songs directed against black women.
I still like you a lot, Mediahohoho, but I'm against, "Minorities are too Noble for That" arguments.
Purely a question of background and access, as with everybody else.
Jezebel : Gawker :: Barnard : Columbia
How many non-white, non-asian people are currently working at the Dentonplex?

The commenters have gotten stupider lately (and I don't mean AnnaBanana). Please retire my avatar, I'm done here.
Yeah, it's probably just that blacks aren't into it. Anybody criticizing the NBA for the lack of white players? ( I hope I can say that without offending SOMEONE). Since I am really afraid of being politically incorrect or insensitive I refer to all dark skinned people as Canadians. Perhaps Google does the same. Got to go and watch the Cleveland Native Americans playing New York Northern States Caucasians.
@Seeräuber Jenny:
Sorry for the double posting.
But don't think racism doesn't enter into scheduling in some schools. I once knew an African Canadian lawyer who'd moved to California as a teenager. It was six months before he realized that there were AP classes. Seems nobody had bothered to tell him.
@lilyb: Flat learning curve. I meant flat learning curve.
@topgun:
"Yeah, it's probably just that blacks aren't into it."
Sorry, that explanation is way too simple. It hasn't just happened that many blacks are "into" fields that require minimal or no education.
