Maybe I should have called my blog "Fully Loaded."

Hm. I like the top post about touring the Freedom Arms factory in Wyoming. There must be so many reasons to use a revolver when hunting. Like, I dunno, putting one point blank between the deer's eyes to send a message to the rest of the deer. Or giving a rabbit a revolver and having a duel, should the rascal besmirch thy lady's honor.

You guys, looking at this blog and all its displays of manhood, I just thought of something--guns kinda look like penises. Big scary metal ones that can kill you!

Also, there is a delightful picture of a small Corsican ram, shot dead, with a gun lying on its belly. I think I'm going to go back to looking at celebrity blogs where they at least pretend to care about animal rights now, kthnxbai.

I wish I had something funny, but I have too-close relatives who are into this shit, and it is positively creepy. There's no changing them, either. All their kids could get blown away and it wouldn't turn them off guns, it'd just be a signal for them to arm up.

Sometimes I think we'd be better off giving these people their own country. Except they'd want Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana, and I'd like to visit those states without resort to chafing body armor.

Still, a smoothbore .410 handgun with proper choke would make an effective small game gun out to 25-yards or so were it not for our silly gun laws that prevent us from owning such useful firearms.

How many times do I tell myself this daily? Finally someone who reads my mind.

@LolCait: By any moral standard, using a revolver to end the suffering of a wounded animal is preferable to letting the animal suffer. You may not agree with big game hunting in the first place, but to allow hunting but not allow mercy-killing is inhumane.

@LolCait: Many people that hunt big game (buffalo, elk, bears, etc.) carry both a rifle and a revolver. Even an experienced hunter may not kill a large animal with a single shot over a couple hundred yards. It's not like dove or duck hunting, and a several hundred pound, wounded animal is in pain and dangerous. Most rifles aren't exactly made for close-range shooting.

What silly gun laws? A few years ago, somewhere midtown, I typed my credit card number on a phone keypad during a call to Amex customer support. Later that evening I returned home to an urgent message from them asking me to return their call. Turned out they wanted to know more about my purchase of $5000 worth of "merchandise" from a mail order establishment down in Florida (World Of Weapons!)that very day.

And yes, they were guns. The culprits called back for ammo shortly thereafter, says my statement.

@LolCait: My uncle actually goes deer hunting with a pistol very frequently. Its actually more sporting than a rifle in a lot of ways, because you have to get in very close, giving the deer ample opportunity to catch your scent/sound and run for it. It takes a lot of skill to accomplish.

Actually, most gun enthusiasts are quite normal and respectful of the power of a gun. It's the nutters that make them all look bad. It's hard to tell the difference between the two until the nutter guy is shooting you in the face, and by that time, it's really too late.

@YubaRiver: No, by trying to get in close to the animal you are being far more sporting because you are playing to their advantages (scent and hearing), as opposed to sitting in a tree from a few hundred yards away where distance negates that. When you're that far, its really just a matter of how good a shot you are; when you get in very close there are far more variables which can give the animal an upper hand. He also has been known to hunt naked "like the indians used to do it" but thats a whole other story.
