In many ways British artist Damien Hirst is like Richard Pryor in Brewster's Millions, except less black and less funny. But Hirst, like Pryor, has a ton of cash and needs to spend it in seemingly ridiculous and prodigal ways! Hirst's latest cash wad is wending its way back out of his bank account; it arrived from the sale of his $100-million diamond-encrusted skull, "For the Love of God." How is he spending it? By bidding on white truffles, of course. Duh!
One of the biggest truffles found in half a century — a 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) specimen unearthed in Italy late last month — has sold for $330,000 (161,000 pounds) at an auction held simultaneously in Macau, London and Florence.Sadly Hirst was outbid by Stanley Ho, a Macau casino mogul. So now he's got all this cash to spend and no truffles. He must be thinking, "What would Richard Pryor do?" History recommends: Do a ton of coke and talk about pussy and Gene Wilder.The giant fungus was presented on a silver platter by an Italian chef flanked by Chinese models to the flash of cameras ahead of the auction at Macau's Grand Lisboa Hotel.
