I just got over the fact that Sassy was never coming back. Now this! A cruel, cruel summer indeed.

I feel bad for the staffers, because that SUCKS. I will say, though, that I never was able to get past comparing "Jane" to "Sassy." In that contest, the non-"Sassy" party always loses.

But it was nearly the best of a shitty lot...I always liked "Bust" better, but that's because I enjoy bad erotica and reading about crafts that I will never actually make because I am extremely lazy.

I used to LOVE JANE- had a subscription and everything. But around the time Jane left they changed the format from cool to COSMO / Allure crap. I canceled my subscription, refused to buy a copy. I am glad to see other readers felt the same way- boobs or not- this is what JANE gets!

Jane was a deeply flawed magazine, and it had definitely gotten more mainstream and shitty, but now there's not a single women's magazine out there save Bust and Bitch that will refrain from chastising the female gender about why pear shaped bodies don't go with denimn capris (or something) and the twenty-bilionth new diet will really work this time!

Blah. The print journalism world is dying.

Dammitdammitdammit! It had just started to be something I actually felt invested in -- a magazine with an actual editorial voice that felt relevant to me and not just some remote "Hey - did you know that guys REALLY love it when you give them blowjobs!?!" post-collegiate rag al la Cosmo. I'm vexed.

And despite all the wacky comedy of the various regime changes at Radar, I unapologetically dug the content, and I'm sad to see it go.

My sympathies to the staffers at both mags. Y'all oughta fuse into Jane-Dar and storm the battlements at Conde. Confuse them with doughnuts and off-the-rack eveningwear and take over their desks to produce the most post-Spy 'n zines literate culture rag known to publishingkind.

I've still got some residual loyalty for Jane Pratt, too, despite the fact her actual editorial contributions have always been somewhat of a question mark. Brandon Holley was truly the living embodiment of Petersen's "Sassy."

I say Radar and Jane should merge to become Rane. As in, what it's doing on my parade today. I got a subscription by cashing in unwanted miles, which means now I'm going to have to roll them over into getting Maxim, Parenting, or Cat Fancy.

Wasn't JANE the only team Gawker actually beat in the New York All Media Bowling League? You guys must be sweating bullets.

I couldn't agree with your more. I was a loyal Sassy and Jane reader, and once Jane Pratt left, the mag changed for the worse. I didn't renew my subscription and have no regrets about that. It felt like everyone there was trying too hard to be trendy or edgy.
While it sucks for people to get laid off, life goes on and there are more jobs out there. Take the summer off and enjoy yourself.

Damnit. I just bought a subscription, too. Not for the magazine, but for the free bag that you're supposed to get. It was brown corduroy and ridiculously "functional cute." This explains why my damn bag hasn't come and I've been staring at Zooey Deschanel's face for the past month, waiting for the next issue so I can be justified in saying "well, the magazine's here, but where the hell's my free bag???" If someone doesn't send me a cute, functional bag, Im'a slap a bitch.

IMHO, Jane started going downhill when they eliminated the Makeunders, where they pressure-washed some overpainted young trollop, took her glitter and power mousse away, and did her up using (supposedly) only four or five products! Including hair! I never believed it (I always thought I could detect some additional eye shadow or contouring in the teeny-tiny "after" photo), but I loved it anyway.

Hang on, I rallied after that last Sanka.

This means: No more Muppet-y Erin Flaherty and her insane brand of White Ebonics/baby talk/text message-speak.

And my most-hated coworker just resigned in tears. Some days you eat the bear, man.

Crap. Even though it had taken a downturn since the departure of Pratt, I still rooted for it as the only not-completely-vapid-and-man-obsessed mainstream women's magazine. Apparently the mainstream didn't appreciate it, however. I'm hoping my subscription rolls over to Vanity Fair (seriously).

I'm sure Dove Charney will be waiting for Claudine Ko with open arms. And fly.

Where will I be able to find titties on the Internet now?

I am seriously shocked that people are upset. Was I the only one who thinks this came about 2 years too late? People still read this rag?

jane has been, for a couple of years now, lazy and narcissistic. they used the same "sources" over and over, including roommates and friends, if you paid attention. i don't have time for magazines that create "hip" like that.

I wasn't even in Jane's demographic (too old/unhip), but I read it at Borders. I didn't subscribe or anything, mind you.

That's what happens when you take the Jane out of Jane. Although personally, I thought the death knell sounded a few years ago when they brought on Pamela Anderson as a columnist. It's been downhill ever since.

Boo! I'm no longer a twentysomething but I still enjoy reading Jane. I'll miss it. I am guessing Conde Nast will substitute Glamour or Lucky for the remainder of subscriptions - both of which I already get. (I'm hoping for Allure or Vanity Fair in its place)

That sucks.. I always got the feeling they were running on a shoestring and 3/4 of the masthead was pseudonyms for the same five people. Still, I clung it to it as the last gasp of Sassy. Now I have to grow up. Boo.

I loved Sassy, but Jane always reeked of hypocrisy. They bragged about have a food column called "Eat" but hired some of the most underfed models in the business. They thought they were cool and ironic by putting people like Paris on the cover when in fact, they just seemed like Cosmo Jr. for the Urban Outfitters set. They tried way too hard to seem "indie" and "cool". If I want calculated hipness, I'd buy Nylon.

Radar Online and Gawker are reporting that Conde Nast has shuttered Jane magazine, the young women's title that tried to walk in the same kitten heels as the legendary Sassy.read...

Jane should have done what FADER/Cornerstone Publications did-- place a cool ad every other page. It didn't take away from the publcation. or become an eyesoar. There was more of an art to it, a lot like way Adbusters did it.
