Bugging the 'Times'

20051128bedbug.jpgWe had our own bedbug infestation about two years ago. Intern Alexis, famously, faced hers around the same time. So, while we're always glad to hear other New Yorkers being warned of the problem, we can't help wondering what made the Times decide yesterday was the right time for an article headlined, "Just Try to Sleep Tight. The Bedbugs Are Back."

They're back, are they? Yeah, we know.

We wonder if perhaps reporter Andrew Jacobs — the man behind such beautiful imagery as "[b]edbugs are back and spreading through New York City like a swarm of locusts on a lush field of wheat" — has just recently had his own unfortunate run-in.

Or else maybe he's spent two years working on that locusts simile.

  • this is the best line in the whole article. " 'I've become obsessed," said Ms. Torielli, 33, a student who lives in Hell's Kitchen, in Manhattan. "I switched to white sheets so I can see them better, and I've set up a bedbug jail in a Tupperware container that I put on the windowsill to torture them with daylight. It's all-out war.' " A bedbug Jail?!? now that's rich.

  • My personal favorite is when one of the 'bedbug victims' found love as a result of the pests.

  • Good to hear that New Yorkers are getting a little something extra for every $1000 they spend per 100 sqare feet per month in rent.

  • Probably not all their getting. Cockroaches, bedbugs, mold, mice, rats, anybody?

  • That picture is horrific.

  • i'm still waiting for the NYT to write its sunday mag cover story on how EDGY the city has become...i suspect it will hit stands in late '06-early '07.

  • I had bedbugs also, and my blog was quoted in that New Yorker article. Hah.
