There's this vocab building website called FreeRice where for every word you get correct, they donate 10 grains of rice through the United Nations to end "World Hunger." You might think it is a footle but to pretermit the problem would be splenetic! For every word you get wrong, they shoot an orphan, so be careful. [FreeRice]

With my vocabulary skills, you'll be lucky to get enough for a fatty tuna roll.
Does this mean some poor guy has to count out rice ten grains at a time?
Are the people workig on this tempted to get shooting, just because its got more of an instant gratification thing, as opposed to the grain-counting?
I'm too scared to go to the site.
this is like the hangman website i'm building for texan prisoners.
If they'll drop Condoleezza out of a plane, I'm in.
Yeah, and if you forward this comment to ten friends, the Coca-Cola company will send you free Coca-Cola for the next year. Don't ask me how it works; it just does!
This is just like the time I masturbated and all those kittens got hit by cars.
@ehkca: No. I actually emailed them about this, and there's an ISO for grains of rice per kilo, which is what they use to determine the size of the donations.
Also, I am Queen Dork of that site. I wish they had a thing where you could enter your initials after a spectacular run, like I used to do on the Ms. Pac-Man at the pizzeria when I was a kid.
@ehkca:
You might think so, but he gets paid per grain in Malaysian sex slaves, so he turns out to be a rich, rich man indeed.
@LolCait: HA
@VenusCloacina:
So... you're bragging about your vocabulary or your philanthropy? I wasn't clear...
And I just did like twenty words and knew them all. Unimpressed.
@rod: but i ate for the first time in 2 years! thank you kind white man!
@Trampoline: I think I'm bragging about my obsessive-compulsive tendencies. LET ME SHOW YOU THEM.
(Like it surprises anybody here!)
@collegecallgirl: hahaha!!
I knew my habit of dropping the word "synecdoche" into every conversation was secretly saving the world. Narcissism validated!
@collegecallgirl: Are you sure it wasn't God? Or Tony Danza?
@VenusCloacina: I felt that way about knowing "methelin." Thank you, dork novels!
"metheglin." Ugh. No thank you!
Ten grains per word? Oh well... I guess world hunger can wait a few more decades to be solved.
@emily: I was pleased because I'm finally seeing dividends from when I studied for the GRE.
@VenusCloacina:
Your OC tendencies have been - and continue to be - a source of great Gawkertainment for myself and so many others... so please carry on!
Good grief! what is on this site that my firewall blocks it?! Apparently I work for the vocabulary nazis... no rice for me.
@collegecallgirl: This is why you don't touch yourself and drive. Unless it's an automatic.
Never underestimate a liberal in a bad mood with a copy of the OED. I just bankrupted Uncle Ben and gave all of Indonesia scurvy.
@jobbotch: I suck: I had to look up that word.
At first, I thought it was a new Gawker-speak/ Catch-phrase for "Syndicated Douchebag" or something.
@KarenUhOh:
sad - they would have enjoyed the rijstaffel
@emily: Methelin is the delicious beverage made from fermenting crank! You could beat Drizzt Do'Urden into a bloody pulp with some of that.
@MyCubeHas3Sides: It should be!!
@VenusCloacina: Does this mean there's a level above 45?
It's so fun! It's like studying for SAT analogies all over again!
I'm taking the GRE in two weeks - this is super useful to me! Thanks for being so servicey!
@jobbotch: Yeah, right?
Who would qualify as a Syndicated Douchebag?
Dick Cheney and George Bush (obvs.)
*can't think, drawing blank...must go out drinking now!*
I got the word "devastate" correct, then saw that 10 grains of rice were being donated as a result. I felt that 10 grains was a good stopping point, so as to truly let the meaning of the word sink in.
Who knew there were so many words that mean "goat-like"? I had it come up twice.
If I can spell "complete protein" will they throw in a handful of beans?
@furious_george: Oh god that's cruel
@TedSez: Nope. I CAN HAZ KWASHIORKOR?
