Breaking! Fear not, downtown organic food lovers! The long-awaited, and long-delayed, Whole Foods at Bowery and Houston will open on March 29 at 8 a.m. If only Joey Ramone were still alive to see this!
There is excitement, according to the press release.
We are truly excited about opening our Bowery location. There will not be just one or two unique features within this store - but dozens! The next generation of food retail will be right here in New York City!" said Christina Minardi, president of Whole Foods Market's Northeast Region. That sounds like the perfect place to meet a quality man, doesn't it?The new Bowery Houston location will feature the company's first-ever Fromagerie, featuring exclusive aged cheeses from Herve Mons; multiple sit-down dining venues and a large caf accommodating more than 299 people; and a culinary center where New Yorkers can learn cooking skills from Whole Foods Market chefs and other top-rated chefs from around the city.

Oh my gawwww! Oh my gawwwwww! I can't believe it's finally heeeeeere!

And I'm goin' after it."--J.R.
By the way, good to know Mons's cheese is coming to your hood too.
Terrible feng shui at that location.
I'm afraid that even whole foods' first ever fromagerie won't be able to overcome the intersection of all those crowded streets.
"more than 299 people" ?
like someone really, really coke-thin can squeeze in?
Kiss that Essex Street Market goodbye...
samples of apples!
samples of apples!
everyday in my hood!
so excited
Take it from a former Whole Foods at Time Warner shopper, The outfit went JetBlue on its customers many months ago. Hope you like waiting in line for 40 minutes to buy moldy raspberries, bugs in your cupcakes, inedible local crop tomatoes and zero customer service. -
And try emailing WF website - local or corporate - No response.
Nothing worse than the enlightened corporate culture crumbling away like so much stale parmesan from the Fromagerie
Good Grief - Hire some check out clerks this time.

Oh man, a Whole Foods in my hood. I'm gonna yup it up next month. And then not have any money left for rent. Hey, maybe I can camp out in the Fromagerie. That would be so LES.
Relax folks. All this time you thought you downtown folk were hipsters, and it turns out you're just another flock of yuppies. Park the Volvos over there, please.
why the fuck would you email the whole foods website, they're not going to demold your berries you crazy fuck.
New York's dead.
Are people seriously happy that a chain store from Texas is moving into their neighborhood? I guess New York is dead.
hey, where did the @ things go??
cdmunch - i hate to say it, but i really did just "LOL". thanks for that.
God, remember what used to be on that very spot? One fabulous, huge, cheap parking lot. That besides blocking my view of the beautiful Tweed Courthouse means I will never spend more than $175 at one time at that location, and I am serious. Fresh Direct forever.
ps I hope you all remember that putting in the Whole Foods was considered to be "giving back to the community" so that the developers didn't have to set aside "affordable " apartments for the old or the "poor". OH, yeah and the Y I can't afford to go to cause I buy food.God,that is one ugly building.
Sorry, but the flagship in Austin still blows it away.
Why go to Whole Paycheck when you can go to the Co-op on 4th between Bowery and Second? They are the real deal, actually do something for the neighborhood and are open until 9:00. Produce comes in throughout the week but the big shipments are on Tuesday and Friday.
Avalon Chrystie Place is an 80-20 building. 20% of the apartments are set at "below-market" rent rates and leased to low income folks, while the other 80% are at market rate. I believe the same is true of Avalon Bowery Place.
for the record, "oh my gawwwww" is used with irony by most people. including me.
I liked Whole Foods when it was an itty bitty co-op on South Lamar. It pretty much sold out after that.
For the record, that's not irony, it's sarcasm.
Hmmm, whole foods = organic, pesticide free stuff? If I have no chemicals then how can I become old and bitter as I so desperately yearn to be?
I live about 10 blocks south of this location and am not ashamed to admit I am excited about this. There are NO decent all-purpose grocery stores on the LES! I don't care if it's a chain - I just want somewhere within walking distance where I can buy decent food without having to go into 10 different places.
Flagship in Austin = awesome. So in agreement! It's the only reason I go to SXSW!
And from what I've heard about the Houston Street space, that store is going to be on a rat burial ground... the above apartments are apparently infested with the little buggers.
Like Florida Evans said, "damn, damn damn!!"
astralgirl: actually, that wouldn't surprise me at all - the parking lot that used to be there was FULL of rats.
