    'WWD': Don't Believe the Hype

Some interesting news from today's WWD:

The hype surrounding the launch of Vogue Living may have been overblown. For one, executives are insisting Vogue Living is a special interest publication that does not have a definite regular frequency. Its 500,000 rate base includes 300,000 copies that will be polybagged to Vogue subscribers with household incomes over $100,000, or a net worth of over $1 million, or a home valued at more than $500,000. At present, Vogue has scheduled only one additional edition of Living for some time next year. According to a Vogue spokeswoman, "Moving forward you will see different Vogue products. Some will be new launches, some will be stand-alone issues." By comparison, Men's Vogue was greenlighted after its first issue and published four issues in 2006.

There's nothing that angers us more than overblown hype, particularly when it concerns a Cond Nast publication. Who on earth could have perpetuated such a fraud on a gullible, magazine-reading public? After the jump, we name the guilty men.

As Elle Accessories' fall edition hits newsstands on Tuesday, Carol Smith, the magazine's senior vice president and group publishing director, is thinking about additional brand extensions. Smith believes there's room for an Elle Runway Report - an overview of looks from every show during fashion week; Elle Beauty, oreven Elle Living, although the latter probably won't come to fruition, given the launch of Vogue Living this fall (not to mention Elle Decor).

It can't be ignored that Bazaar rival Vogue will also be publishing its own extra issue devoted to home life, called Vogue Living, thisfall. Bailey, of course, said there was no connection. "This idea didn't happen as a response to anything anyone else is doing."

Anna Wintour will appear as editorial director on yet another masthead this year, and no, we're not talking about Vogue Living.

Vogue Living is a go for November, with Vogue's European editor at large, Hamish Bowles, at the helm. A spokesman for the magazine confirmed a 13th issue will be published this year, devoted to home, culture and style, and will ship to most Vogue subscribers and to newsstands.

Meanwhile, regarding the upcoming launch of Vogue Living in the U.S., Wintour said the idea of putting out a special issue of the magazine this year "is still very much under discussion" in the halls of Cond Nast, but she declined further comment.

Now that Mama Vogue, Teen Vogue and Men's Vogue are available in the U.S., all the Vogue family needs is a place to call home. And that's exactly what it'll get if Vogue Living materializes. The big question seems to be not whether a special outsert or newsstand issue will happen, but whether it will arrive this year or next.

But Wintour may have less time for Fielden if, as expected, work begins in earnest on a shelter-based spinoff, likely to be called Vogue Living. Florio confirmed it's "something we'd like to do this year," but added, "We're going to finish what we started with Men's Vogue before we start to talk about Vogue Living."

    Oh.
