Video that International Solidarity Movement (ISM) volunteer Bianca Zammit shot up until the time she was shot by the Israeli military during a nonviolent protest in Gaza. The demonstration opposed an Israeli-imposed buffer zone that is having a devastating effect on farmers in Gaza who are now no longer able to work their land. Protesters report that Israeli soldiers fired live ammunition at the protesters at point blank range. In addition to Zammit, 22-year old Hind Al Akra was shot in the stomach and 18-year old Nidal Al Naji was shot in the leg. All three are now in stable condition.

Pope Pius XII saved more Jews from the Holocaust than any other person. Many more than Oscar Schindler. Thousands of Jews were kept on Papal Estates and not turned over to the Nazis. Tens of thousands were deemed Catholics by the Church in order to avoid turning them over. Just a reminder that the Vatican is about one square mile in size and has no army or air force.
The Chief Rabbi of Rome at the time of WWII spoke very highly of the Pope and the Vatican's actions that largely saved the Jewish community of Rome from destruction.

@registered: There is still an obligation to disclose material terms even to a sophisticated investor. Even in the case of sophisticated investors one cannot purposely engage in fraud. Most of these CDO packages would not have happened unless a big hedge fund or bank sponsored them or took on the riskiest portion of the portfolio. Paulson stepped up was buying the lower traunches which then made the other investors more likely to take the plunge.
The issue is whether the Abacus investors were aware that the flaming bag of shit sold to them by Goldman was purposely designed to fail by the Paulson and whether or not that disclosure would have been material to their decision to make the investment. It likely was material. Now, it is possible that Paulson's short was disclosed in which case the SEC had no case.
On a broader level, you should not be able to buy insurance on a house made of straw that you soak in gasoline and profit from the ensuing fire. That is not economically productive activity.
The fact that Goldman "lost"
money on this one deal is irrelevant. The issue is how much it made in fees and profit on its other deals with Paulson. Back in the day, there were Three Card Monte games on Delancey, and Goldman is playing the role of the Shill to coax a Mark (allegedly sophisticated investor) into the game. Sure Goldman "loses" money on this hand, but makes tens of millions on its other deals with Paulson.
If the Federal government did its job at the border none of this would be happening. The State of Arizona, albeit in a likely unconstitutional manner, is making up for the failure of Obama's administration to effectively monitor this country's border.
