Oh jeez, I just looked it up and the minute of silence is ALSO a state law, passed together with the Texas Pledge thing.

Every morning the announcement says something about using the minute to pray, meditate or simply reflect. AND a district court judge upheld it after an atheist family challenged it as mandated prayer in school.

God Bless Texas, indeed...

It's true about the Texas Pledge-- the ledge made it a state law starting in the 2003-2004 school year. The minute of silence might not be a state requirement, though it is required in the Austin Independent School district for sure. You must be older than a fifth grader (not that you look a day over 10ish)!

It's hard for my out-and-proud atheist 10-year-old. He hasn't gotten to the point where he refuses to say it, but I can see that day coming.
