There is always truth in jest and it is clear that a huge amount of resentment exists.
The tipping point, perhaps?
I don't want to sit there at the end of a meal wondering if 20% or 25% is the difference between my server paying their rent or not.
If a server is being paid in tips, the restaurant should work out what % needs to be added to each bill to pay these people fairly and I will happily pay it (if the service is outstanding I would probably chuck in even more) and leave me in peace to enjoy my evening.
And if the restaurant isn't passing on those tips don't blame me - go and find someone who gives a shit - like a union or find a job where the owner isn't an asshole.
I always overtip. Not because I'm generous or because I think the service is good - I do it because I can't be bothered with the hassle and drama.
I don't spend every subway ride wondering if I should still give the driver 15% because the two minute stop in the tunnel was sort of offset by the nice annoucement.
btw - If the piece had been about gays, african-americans, asian-americans or disabled people being bad tippers, do you think the tone would have been quite so abusive and stereotypical? I don't think so.
Double standards, methinks.
