Wasn't there a time when Queer was seen as offensive (at least if spoken by a straight person? ) Even if gays have accepted it (re: Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) tongue in cheek, it seems like in a pre-1960s context, it's almost like the gay version of the word "Negro" isn't it? Or is it fully acceptable and interchangeable with simply the word "Gay"?
True story, I used my Gawker star to get into the Webby Awards afterparty at the Hiro Ballroom a couple of years ago while on an extended layover in NYC. There are many more shenanigans of higher degree in my portfolio, but that's my one good Gawker-relate one ;)

K, I meant as far as the contemporary pop music scene of the day, she certainly did. As an avid Casey Kasem listener, I had never so much as heard her name before the Grammys® sweep, which shortly thereafter did her "Have a Heart" single start to chart, and I listened to the Top 40 countdown in its entirety every freakin' week. That's not to say she wasn't already a legend in other genres including blues, country, folk, etc, but as far as the Hot 100, she was not at all on the radar -- and that is what I meant to imply.
