It is as if media itself is dying. It is not. I do not see any difference between a journalist writing for the New York Times or writing for www.nytimes.com. Instead of the forthcoming, woe is (the) me-dia industry, it should be realized that this is basic (read and emphasize: BASIC) economics. No one reads newspapers anymore except old people who think the internet is a fad and people who take public transportation. Why come home and sit down in a study and pull out the trusty Grey Lady when that news is already old. It's much more valuable to sit in front of a computer where the news is live and there is a potential for feedback. Further, if they did their job better, i.e. speak truth to power frequently and obsessively, maybe all these internet startups that are supposedly usurping their throne (see Joshua Micah Marshall, who if he doesn't receive 10-15 Pulitzers by the time he's done would be a travesty and a sham of everything media stood for)
Some of these people who are being fired might want to take their severance pay and take some classes on HTML coding and CSS maybe start a website or go to work for their employer's website instead of bitching about losing their job. For Chrissake people, MAUREEN DOWD HAS A JOB with www.nytimes.com. Have you read her work in the past two years? It's as if Dennis Miller mated with Michael J Fox and their offspring turned out to be MoDo.
