In an average production, the cast never leaves the stage and only uses props and maybe a feather boa to denote "rich". But in this production they needed to go further to make it a "Broadway" level production, and justify charging Broadway prices. So there's more costume changes and such in the new version.
The new musical arrangements are fantastic, BTW. The CD is worth a listen if you like the show.

Well Godspell is one of those "a bunch of hippies playing dress-up in the park" kind of shows, so the looks should be kind of wacky. But yeah, most of them didn't get it at all.
