As Mitt Romney settles in to gloat over his inevitable victory in tonight's Florida primary, it is worth noting that he and the rest of the Republican candidates are still viewed as losers by an increasing number of Republican voters. A new Pew Research poll finds that the number of GOP voters who let out an annoyed sigh when you ask them about their crop of candidates is larger than even a few weeks ago: More »

Today is that great quadrennial celebration in American democracy: The eve of the day that our political system can completely stop caring about Iowa for another few years, aside from delivering the annual Christmas card of billions of dollars in useless farm subsidies. The Iowa caucuses, however, must be dealt with first, as Republican caucus-goers prepare to crown either Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum, or Ron Paul as their new Harvest King tonight. How did things go so wrong? Let's go back and relive the crucial moments of this Iowa campaign season, together, by looking at some funny pictures and making dumb jokes. More »

Alright, it was cute when Republican base trolled us with the Trump, Bachmann, Perry, and Cain surges and collapses (surglapses, we'll call them, or perhaps anti-boners), but throwing Newt Gingrich onto the heap of other Potemkin candidates after he was leading by 20 points everywhere like a week ago, this late in the process, is cruel. More »

Being a carefree Republican gasbag isn't always as fun as it seems. All they want to do is call President Obama the worst names and insult his heritage. And yet personally attacking the president, as Republican strategists said in what was supposed to be a private conference call today, would seriously turn off the many swing voters needed to win a general election. Having to build majority coalitions on a national scale just takes the joy out of life, doesn't it? More »

The Economist ran a fascinating (and popular) poll of British readers, asking which "Americanisms" they use. Many, it turns out, have taken to saying "apartment" instead of "flat" and "sidewalk" instead of "pavement." So let's flip it around: Which dreadful Americanisms would you trade for something from the mother country? More »

It's a frustrating day for pundits! The political world just wants to see Herman Cain's rapid, painful demise, right now, so we can get on with the business of a "Gingrich surge," which can then be brought to its own rapid, painful demise, leading us to the eventual acceptance of Mitt Romney. More »

For the first time, more Americans support legalizing marijuana than oppose it. So far, at least, it seems like Texas Gov. Rick Perry made a fine last-minute decision to enter the presidential race. From our side, we applaud his magical ability to produce daily blog material. And for him, he's already leading every national poll! There have been several chapters in the still-extremely-early 2012 presidential race. There was the time that Newt Gingrich's smarts and policy chops was going to shake up the contest. That ended. There was the time Herman Cain's business acumen and tea party ties were going to be a real factor in the race. That didn't work out. Then, of course, there was Donald Trump. It's been clear for some time now that the media is ignoring Ron Paul. Now it's a mathematical fact. Pew Research has crunched the numbers, and it turns out the media's giving less love to Ron Paul than to fellow presidential candidate Jon Huntsman. More »

This particular class of legislators is, we can all agree, an exceptionally stupid group of people. A recent online poll asked 30,000 thousand users of social networking site Badoo (so, not Americans basically) to pick the funniest and least funny countries from a list of fifteen, and the good old Red, White & Blue came out on top. More »

Former Ambassador to China and Utah Governor Jon Huntsman could do well against President Obama, head-to-head! But in a new poll of Iowa Republicans, just one respondent out of 481 wants him to win the nomination. In these rapidly changing times, it's almost comforting to know that some issues can still divide the country right down the middle. Gallup has conducted its 2011 Values and Beliefs poll, which presented a sample of Americans with 17 controversial issues facing the nation today — everything from "wearing fur" (56% find it morally acceptable vs. 39% thinking it's morally wrong) to "pornography" (30% vs. 66%) to "gay or lesbian relations" (like fur, also 56% vs. 39%) to "cloning humans" (12% vs. 84%). One topic, however, produced the least amount of public consensus, with just 3% separating the moral yays from the moral nays: "doctor-assisted suicide." More »

The results of a new Associated Press-GfK poll are out, and President Obama's approval rating now stands at 60 percent — his highest mark in two years (attributed mainly to the return of independent voters and the capping of Osama bin Laden). Good news for Barack Obama! His standing also improved on national security, with 73 percent saying they trust him to handle the threat of terrorism. Meanwhile, we still get to enjoy that never ending clusterfuck called the War on Terror and will continue to for some time. Some considered President Obama's decision to release his birth certificate last week a fool's errand, since those who didn't think he was born in the United States wouldn't ever respond to more definitive evidence. It still may have been a silly argument to engage — that press conference of him showing his papers will always seem beyond surreal, if not plain depressing. But now a whole 70 percent of Americans believe he was born in Hawaii! You know what that means: This issue is coming dangerously close to something that we'll never have to write about again. More »
