I get that frequently as well -- especially when navigating between entries on the sites. It happens in Firefox just as often as Chrome. Very frustrating, and certainly has put a dent in my visits. #redesign(Edit comment)
Gawker used to remember that I prefer blogview, but today it's not only defaulting to that mainpage thingy, but the unchanging page also comes up whenever I click the Gawker logo to escape from a post.
It's frustrating as heck because my habit is to read a post and the comments, then click the logo to get the newer stories. It's also (apparently) my usual MO to click the logo for a blogview reload, if my Gawker window/tab has been idle for a time.
BTW: I'm going to add that because today is the first time I've had so much exposure to the new mainpage thingy, it's obvious how it could help point toward featured stories and exclusives, but it doesn't showcase the breadth of Gawker's coverage or the frequency of its updates. #crosstalk(Edit comment)
This is as close as I've been able to get to a Gawker page in two days. Usually I get the logo across the top of the page, and sometimes the "latest stories" header, but usually just "Gawker". Nothing else. Just a blank page. I usually Chrome, but I fired up IE to see it if would work there, but it didn't.
I don't know what to do. And I don't know how to see any suggestions even if you folks have any for me! *sigh* I suppose if someone wanted to take the time to email me with an idea, that would be great, but I doubt anyone would want to go that far out of their way! I'm rather at a loss... #redesign(Edit comment)
The option/box to click on the blog view seems to have disappeared from the Gawker main page, in case you wander there indirectly by hitting the Gawker link above. Also, it seems impossible to upload a photo, even with a http link. I hope you are not taking away the blog view, it's so much better than the alternative.
It's the eyeball thing next to the magnifying glass by your user name. I have it in my browswer as blog.gawker.com but I don't know if that matters or not. #crosstalk(Edit comment)
I don't know then. I don't know why I can see an eyeball and you can't. That is quite unusual. Perhaps you need to hire a Private Eye to find it? Can you see the search button/magnifier? Maybe send a screen shot to the help desk. (Edit comment)
Right, it just seems more uniform when things don't work. I use Firefox not sure that those kind of things have anything to do with it. Hopefully someone can help you.
Like right now I am getting double notifications and the posts are not in the right order. (Edit comment)
If you notice, the sequence of comments is also out of order, even in this thread. That has been going on intermittently for a little while now. #crosstalk(Edit comment)
Reasons why whoever's doing Gawker tech stuff is awesome right now.
1. PM notifications 2. Cross-posted articles automatically open in a new window instead of dumping you out of Gawker 3. Yay, once again able to start new threads at work!
I don't know where else to put this #redesign message, but since this most recent Gawker implementation, I've been unable to view Gawker-hosted video in Chrome.
When the post first loads and the video is a thumbnail, it displays fine, but as soon as the player loads, it shrinks to the size of a microdot. I've not had any issues with embedded YouTubes, Vimeos or other players, it's just the Gawker player.
Thus far, my workaround has been to load the posts in another browser, but it'd be really nice if I could view everything in Chrome.
I haven't had any problems viewing them in chrome, could it possibly be something in your settings/virus protection? Please keep in mind I don't know tons about how either of those things would affect that.
I haven't found anything. My flash is fully updated and the videos display properly in other browsers. For me, it has seemed to be an issue with Chrome and it only involves the Gawker in-house videos, but if you and others aren't experiencing it, I guess I could try uninstalling and reinstalling again. #crosstalk(Edit comment)
As am I, though your comment did prompt me to try another computer and I had no problem pulling-up the Gawkerazzi video on a Windows 7. So, the issue may just to be with my XP machine. (The Chrome version numbers are the same) (Edit comment)
HEY! It's not you. I've got the same problem in Chrome and posted it here in Crosstalk a couple of weeks ago. At the time, no one else mentioned experiencing the same thing.
Kaila stopped by earlier in the week and asked us to send bug reports to her email, preferably with a screen shot. Look through Crosstalk, you may have to go back a page to find her comment.
I msg'ed her with another problem -- I forget what now, and forgot to tell her about this one. (Edit comment)
It's strange because things will run remarkably smooth for a time, and then boom, it's like old Gawk all over again. Remember when every time you would return to crosstalk it would send you to some random date from weeks or months past, kind of like the movie Groundhog's day? #crosstalk(Edit comment)
Well, the fun thing that happened today was that the 'starred' me promoted the 'un-starred' me's comment. How often do you get to promote yourself? #crosstalk(Edit comment)
People using a certain version of Internet Explorer are still unable to post/create new threads. They can only reply. Can we please fix this. I am gunning for a star and it's really limiting my creativity :) #redesign(Edit comment)
I can reply to comments, but can't make one of my own. I have combed over the article pages and there is no option, button, or what have you, to allow this. I'm using explorer; different browsers are not an option.
Is there something I can/should do to be able to post a new comment?
I am having the exact same problem and I also and stuck using explored. If anyone let's you know how to fix this problem, would you please forward the info on to me. I miss posting :( #redesign(Edit comment)

Sadly, I'm not sure what versions of anything is being run on this network. Not that I would ever use precious work time to read Gawker, of course. #redesign(Edit comment)
Suddenly, I am suffering the same fate as others. I was able to log in and see replies. I went to 2 out of 4 replies (from the bottom up) and then it no longer worked. I was directed to the article, but there were no comments. Clicking on "all" or "featured" did not result in the discussion thread appearing. Then after returning to Crosstalk, and along the way, my name and profile, usually at the top right corner completely disappeared. Since that was gone, there also was no option to post, either in "text", "photo" or "youtube". I couldn’t respond to any comments as well.
I had to quit, then come back, and log in again. What’s up?
I was able to accomplish reading the rest of the replies on my return, and my name remains at the top, on my second attempt. I will see if it was just an anomaly. #redesign #crosstalk(Edit comment)
The Curious Case of the Disappearing Gawker Videos: For the past few weeks all videos on Gawker disappear about two seconds after I click on a story. There's a tiny black splotch at the upper left corner of the video space. Click on it and the video sound plays, but no picture.
Anyone else experiencing this?
Strangely, I can see all the music vids here on Crosstalk. But nothing on the main page.
Okay, Gawker folks, you need to fire whoever is designing your site--they can't code to save their life. Or, to be fair, whichever manager is forcing them to code this atrocity needs to be unemployed.
Chrome, IE8/9, and Firefox 3/4/5 all have your site take a loooooooooooooooooong time to load, and this new little tweak you did over the last week has made it worse, if that was possible. With one or two Gawker windows up, all browsers wind up eating half a gig of memory. There are frequent glitches where the sidebar becomes an inch tall, where there is such a long input lag I have to type out comments in Notepad and paste them in (guess what I'm doing right now!), the new "one pane" takes, somehow defying all logic, more time and memory to load than the crappy redesign does (I had to close my browser), and I have to navigate off-site to watch your videos. Or, and this is the best one, "Comment save failed", or you make one edit, and then another, and the first is undone. As if comments aren't why most of us are here.
Oh, then there's this: Half your pictures don't pop-up over the article, but load an entirely new page, and when I come back I've lost my place in the right pane, if I accidentally click the tag instead of the title, same problem, some articles load without any comments, and some articles just don't load at all--I have to hit "refresh" several times to get anything.
Look, guys, Gawker sites used to be small, quick, and easy to navigate--absolutely nothing you have done since February has been anywhere near an improvement. It's to the point that, not only am I hesitant to come here anymore just because it's a headache to navigate, but now my computer can't even handle it.
If your "new streamlined design" can't be rendered quickly and easily by a dual-core 2.6GHz 4GB DDR2 Ram with 4GB ReadyBoost in the quickest browser out there, SOMETHING IS VERY WRONG. We're not talking "pageviews don't matter" or "they just need to adjust", we're talking "their computers and/or browsers cannot render our site without significant system drain, to the point of non-functionality", vis a vis, your site is broken.
Please, back away from forcing new features like this, or at the very least, code a low-memory high-speed layout that people can use who don't have top-of-the-line PC's, one... just like your old design that acually worked smoothly.
I love you guys, but if you keep this up, I don't think we can be friends anymore.
Are you folks using laptops? How much RAM is installed? On a compaq laptop with onboard video and 2GB of RAM, it's pathetic. On my second with 4GB, it's still pretty bad. And the four other computers I use often (roommate's laptop, son's netbook, desktop with 8GB RAM, and work desktop) have had trouble since the redesign--it hasn't ever run faster.
Does the new design run faster than the old one for you, or just okay? #redesign(Edit comment)
I usually use a desktop when I'm on Gawker and I haven't had any real problems since the redesign: that was a nightmare for weeks on end (I gave up after a while and stayed away for a few) but nothing in the last couple of months. Once in a great while I come to Gawker and nothing...empty page. If I reload though everything's fine. #redesign(Edit comment)
Blog view broken for anyone else? On all the Gawker sites, whenever you use blog view, you get "internal server error" with the right frame moved all the way to the left.
Greg, why do I have to reload the page in #crosstalk every time, in order to reply to a comment, after one initial successful comment? Is this happening to anyone else? #redesign(Edit comment)
@GregT "Comment save failed" when replying, or as I just learned, starting a new thread in crosstalk. You have to reload the page, where the comment will appear, after re-posting. It doesn't happen on the main page. #crosstalk #redesign(Edit comment)
Myrna's right. You can PM someone by going to ca.gawker. But you have to let the other person know they have a PM -- the old, clunky system. I think the tech people have said they plan to add some sort of messaging system for NuGawker. #crosstalk(Edit comment)
Here’s another item for my Gawker wish list: when you click on an article and then click on ‘all’ for discussions at the top, would you please remove the required added step of then having to click ‘all’ discussions again, at the bottom? I really don't understand the purpose. It really makes no sense to me. #redesign #crosstalk(Edit comment)
Notifications issue: The first properly directed me to a reply/comment. The rest of the notifications directed me to the article page, but the comments section was blank, and clicking 'all' or 'featured' did not help the problem. I originally logged in at ca.gawk to load a photo, and then switched over to blog and nugawk. However, I logged out, and logged back into nugawk, and the same situation occurred. Are you tinkering today, Greg? #redesign #crosstalk(Edit comment)
It's Back BroPar. Probably some kind of a glitch because I had gone into the alternative dimension @ ca.gawk. It's the only way to post oics, as far as I am concerned. #crosstalk(Edit comment)
Greg, can I hijack your attention for a second? I'm using Safari, and some of the recent videos (e.g., Oprah's goodbye) haven't worked. I've tried on two different Macs. It's a recent thing. Thanks. #crosstalk(Edit comment)
@brotherparish I'm seeing video loading issues intermittently in Safari as well. I'm in touch with our video provider's tech team. Should be resolved this week. #crosstalk(Edit comment)
Has there been any progress with why Gawker sites have trouble loading in Chrome?
I generally have to reload the page three or four times before Chrome will render the page. #redesign
