Everything that Justin Timberlake owns is a sex something, so here's the New York City sex condo he just sold for $4.4 million. That figure is about 10% under what he bought the place for in 2008, but that slight loss is a drop in the bucket for the budding movie star. More »

There was a time when Italians lived in Manhattan's "Little Italy." A long time ago. Now, it's just an area called "Nolita" full of rich people and expensive "boutiques" and the Gawker Media offices, and the only real Italian connection left is the annual Feast of San Gennaro, a horrible week-long street fair featuring fried food and seedy carnival games and lots of the same crappy vendors you see at every street fair in NYC, which represents the "true spirit of Italy" about as much as Chef Boyardee. More »

Yesterday, we shared a photo of the BP station on Houston Street, the sign for which had been vandalized to look like it was dripping with oil. We get some decent Stalker Sightings on the weekends, even with our spies hard at work brunching and shopping and, really, probably reporting these drunk. Yet some are especially concise, astute, catty, or somehow otherwise spectacular. Air conditioning is not just one of the most important summertime problems facing the media. It's a problem facing everyone, because high gas prices are turning air conditioners into machines that burn $100 bills to produce cool air. Stores in high foot traffic areas have always thrown their doors open in the summer and blasted the AC, knowing that sweaty people will come in and browse just to get out of the sun. But now that strategy is not only hugely expensive, but bad PR as well; environmentalist customers will whine and complain and call the city and organize boycotts. An intrepid NYT reporter finds that wanton AC-wasters are centered—like the media—in SoHo: More »

Gothamist.com, the NYC news-about-town blog, today posted a straightforward item about a 19-year-old woman who was raped in her apartment building in Soho last night. They described the suspect: "a black man, about 5'8" and 200 pounds, with a possibly pockmarked face, and he may be between 20-30 years old." Now, we were under the impression that Gothamist's readers are mainly drawn from the broad hipster demographic. So either our impression is way off, or many hipsters are thinly-veiled racist fucks (somewhat true, actually). Because the comments quickly turned into a call to throw black men off buildings: More »

Sometimes, the idea of cutting-edge art is worth more than the actual existence of said art. In the case of the new "luxury lofts" of 151 Wooster, the virtual proximity of a mural by Basquiat and friends might be worth a lot. The apartments are going for about $8 million (with a maintenance of $42,000 a year). The Times reported back in June: When they were tearing into the place, a mural was discovered on the eighth floor behind layers of sheetrock and plumbing. It was, if you're into this sort of thing, beautiful—a collaboration between Jean Michel Basquiat, Fab 5 Freddy, Futura 2000 and others. Basquiat was friends with a previous dweller, art-magazine editor Edit deAk, who lived there in the early 80s when it was probably little more than a coldwater flat. The mural has been renamed "The 151 Wooster Wild Style Wall" and is now the centerpiece of "Gallery 151." And last night was the grand opening! More »

Sometimes two mysterious and crappy things that seem like they should be related actually are. This is great, since it reduces two crappy things into just one. For instance! The gutting sense of wonder at why the "hottest celebrity hangout" is actually the upstairs of a cruddy Soho cafe was somewhat eroded by today's revelation that the owners of "Upstairs" (as Cafe Bari is called) are the swarthy brothers Martignetti. Les freres Martignetti are the proprietors of the eponymous Bar Martignetti, which is to pink-shirted preppy dickheads what an empty parking lot by I-95 is to day laborers: A place to gather and drink and await desperately-needed attention. With that, the fog of mystery dissipates, leaving only the stench of knowledge in its place. More »

A long time ago, when I was reckless and young, I had an affair with my ballet teacher. Her boyfriend of 18 years—at the time they'd been together longer than I'd been alive— was clearly gay. (He was a stylist and Sunday tea party enthusiast.) His gayness didn't prevent him from wanting to kick my ass, however, so some of the affair was conducted at Jerry's, a Soho restaurant right next to the Apple Store, although before the Apple Store existed. Jerry's had okay oatmeal, a good burger and, most importantly, capacious single person bathrooms. And now, as gossip auntie Ben Widdicombe tells us, Jerry's is closing for good come Sunday. A Michael Kors store will open up in its place. Of course it will. More »

Nevermind the jackets or the parapluies, notice anything different about the exterior to Balthazar, the most important dining establishment of our time? That's right, no canvas vestibule. Cue the Vivaldi. Ready Jesus for his resurrection. The spring, man, has cometh. No longer will one have to fling open those annoyingly flimsy canvas-and-plastic doors. No longer will one struggle fruitlessly with the physics of two doors opening into each other. Away with tarrying in the cold confusing antechamber! Spring has sprung. We are all free now! —josh More »

FR.OG reflects the recent affinity for strangely punctuated restaurant names. Like the soon-to-open P*ong, FR.OG is not quite a pun and not quite an acronym. Whatever! It's the downtown expansion of Uptown restaurateur Didier Virot (of Aix). And it's set to begin its war against Balthazar with dry runs on the most auspicious of days: Friday, April 13th. More »

More than a red robin, more than the sprouting of croci or the appearance of toe cleavage, Jimmy Buffet's Frozen Concoction

So this is how Manhattan ends: As New Jersey. Jon Bon Jovi, the rocker polymath and heartthrob to millions of by-now unhappily married women, is moving with his family into a loft atop the old New Museum building at <strike>183</strike> 158 Mercer, according to the NYP. The 7-room, $26 million "trophy penthouse" is, per the Prudential Elliman propaganda, "the most significant Downtown property of all, located on the best street." But we all know why Jon Bon Jovi really chose this apartment. On top of 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, there are two additional powder rooms. More »

Lounge, Soho's multi-leveled, eurotrash horror show dedicated to only the best in expensive, purposely shredded clothing, is being sued by Andrew Boeppel, the store's former publicist, who claims that shopowner Jack Menashe used gay slurs. In February, Boeppel had organized a gay networking party (that's what they call them these days) at the Broadway store; allegedly Menashe was displeased with the homo presence and, using a gay slur, banished the queens to a "tiny cafe in the rear of the store." More »

The New Museum Building at 158 Mercer is fast becoming the well-heeled hotness and, perhaps, the official obsession of the Observer's real estate gang. Last week, the news was that Saturday Night Live producer Marci Klein was moving into an 11th floor unit, purchased for $10 million by a three-person trust including David Geffen. Today the Observer reports that one floor beneath, petite hotelier Andre Balazs is selling his 3,800-square-foot spread for $10 million. And on the 9th floor, there's a unit going for $9.15 million. More »

David Geffen Prances About Mercer Street

The Post reports today that velvet mafioso David Geffen has dropped a wee $10 million on a condo at 158 Mercer Street (he also has a residence at 810 Fifth and an estate in Malibu, for which he fights relentlessly to keep commoners off of "his" beach). The Observer, however, notes that Geffen himself will not be living in the Mercer Street loft; he is one of three trustees listed on the deed-transfer record. The lucky new denizen of Soho is Saturday Night Live producer and fashion progeny Marci Klein, which the Post reported in April — though today, oddly, the paper makes no mention of Klein being the actual resident. More »

High on the list of email subject lines that make us very nervous — up there with "I got the test results back" and "Mediabistro invites you to an EXCLUSIVE cocktail party!" — is one that arrived in our inbox early this afternoon: "What's with all the Jews?" (As we understand it, that was a popular forward in the Weimar Republic.) As it happens, though, today's correspondent was actually posing an interesting question: More »
