    There is proof that areas have more crime that prohibit the pot. As soon as we decriminalize it here you'll see less offenders. For me, it's peoples lives I'm concerned with before my right to use it. It makes no sense that we have zero responsibility for ourselves in matters like these. Also, NYC is no longer cooler than the west coast.

    I agree that "magically reducing American demand" is not going to happen any time soon, and that decriminalization is the answer. Still, the culture does need to change. Our voracious consumption of drugs is on par with our voracious consumption of the Dollar Menu - and no, that's not a munchies joke.

    I can't decide on the illegal/legal proportionality here in SF. The pot clubs sell for "medicinal" purposes, but it's an open secret that you can pay the right doctor and get a card without having any conditions whose symptoms are treatable with pot.

    @propertius: It's kind of a moral dilemma for some of us Californians. It's ridiculously easy to get a med-marijuana card, and there are as many "compassionate pharmacy" storefronts in West Hollywood, Venice, and Hollywood as there are Starbucks. But I don't want to be one of those people that anti-drug activists can point to as abusing much-needed medical-marijuana laws. The fact is that, in the grand scheme of things, I figure it's better to give up easy access to high-grade pot if it means that people who genuinely have a need for it won't be stymied in their efforts to get comprehensive med-marijuana laws passed in other states.

    So ridculously far from the truth.... As with anything that's done by a wide range of people, there exists the same wide range of people, cultures, lifestyles, and social standings doing it.


    The "reality" is probably closer to the fact that there are many people you know and admire who partake. Just like there are people who drink alcohol ranging from the homeless dude in the street to the CEO knocking back scotch in his penthouse, pot is broader than your simple-minded "reality" you've painted here.
