    I've never quite understood how ABOUT.COM makes money. Is About.com profitable in, like, Flooz dollars, circa 1999? It can't possibly make actual money for the Gray Lady.

    @RonMwangaguhunga: per quantcast, compete, etc:

    about.com has more than twice as many unique visitors per month as nytimes.com - and more actual monthly visits.

    Facts conveyed directly from 1998. When will their muck be shoveled out from the top of my search results?

    @Inescapeable Picnic: Yeah, the only useful article I ever found on there was on how to make seven-layer dip. And even that tasted outdated.

    Hey, WTF? We're spreading Calacanis' rumor-mongering about his direct competition without talking to anyone at NYT first?

    Can we just agree that New York City (and, by extension, Gawker) has had way more than enough of Calacanis and let him sink into California obscurity?

    Anyone can become a "guide" and skew the info wherever the hell they want. It's bizarre. Good riddance.

    I’ve always found it a strange site. It tells how to write a business letter in French, gives recipes for enchiladas or soufflé, and offers a concise history of Western music. Evidently it’s original content (for the most part ?) though editorially way uneven.

    About.com is the only thing on the NYT Company's books showing positive trend lines. It's not for sale.

    About seems like the website that had a really good hiding spot when the dot com bubble burst. It musta been under a desk in receiving or something.

    "search engine About.com"

    About.com isn't a search engine, it's a reference site.

    Meanwhile, my $43.52 bid for hotbot.com got no coverage.

    Hopefully whoever or whatever is interested in About.com will get the full picture on the $100mm lawsuit against it... kind of makes it unattractive to buyers, no?

    Another option would be to sell the book review to either Seth Lipsky or Rea Hederman (ie, "The New York Times Review Of Books").

    Calacanis should know-- he's been building a vanity also-ran version of About.com for the past few years.
