I've never quite understood how ABOUT.COM makes money. Is About.com profitable in, like, Flooz dollars, circa 1999? It can't possibly make actual money for the Gray Lady.
I’ve always found it a strange site. It tells how to write a business letter in French, gives recipes for enchiladas or soufflé, and offers a concise history of Western music. Evidently it’s original content (for the most part ?) though editorially way uneven.

about.com has more than twice as many unique visitors per month as nytimes.com - and more actual monthly visits.

About.com isn't a search engine, it's a reference site.

People that were forced to read Gogol in Lit class & who are too stupid to figure out that Google & Gogol are two different things.

Admittedly, it can be hit-or-miss, but I like About.com, formerly The Mining Company. I even subscribe to a couple of its newsletters.
And they've got the search engine strategy figured out. If you Google something, after Wikipedia, the next site on the list is usually About.com.
